Calculating Yardage for a Quilt....

Calculating yardage for a quilt:

1. Decide on the pattern.

2. How many different fabrics will be used?

3. Will there be lots of seam allowances?

4. Does the cutting technique you use waste fabric?

3. How small will the pieces be?

As a general rule, I allow the following for a quilt top:

Twin size quilt 6 yds

Full size quilt 8 yds

Queen 10 yds

King 12 yds

If you plan to use 3 different fabrics equally, divide the yardage by 3 to get the yardage needed for each fabric.

If there is a main color used, I buy an extra yard of that fabric.

A good mix of color is 15% dark, 15% light , 10% accent and 60% medium shades.

Since I strip piece most of my quilts using my own techniques, there is very little, if no waste, I can usually get by with a little less fabric.

But I would prefer to have too much fabric. Once extra fabric goes into my stash, the projects I make from it are Free.

Sew Lazy Interfacings....

A pinwheel quilt block is made from four rectangle squares. make two different pot holders with plain backs, or use one of the potholders for the front and one for the back.

The segments in each of the blocks are made the same, but the sewing steps are different. Click HERE

This is the Iron I Want....

I have used several different cordless irons over the years. My personal favorite is the Panasonic, although it does not have all the things I want in an iron. E-mail both Panasonic and Janome to tell them you want the iron Kaye Wood wants: Cordless, NO steam (the bottom completely flat with no holes), no auto shut-off, Teflon bottom, in a heat-proof fabric carrying case which opens into a pressing mat. This iron would be ready to take to class and could be packed up while still hot.

Show and Tell....

I made this "One Block Wonder" quilt for my Granddaughters college graduation. This was from one fabric and my first attempt at this type of quilt. It was so easy and so much fun, I can't wait to make another one.
