Hi Quilters!

Today at the cabin we are seeing rain and a chance of thunderstorms. I LOVE thunderstorms, and made sure at an early age that my kids didn't grow up to be afraid of them. We used to sit out under the porch overhang and listen to the thunder and watch the light show. Now, granted, we were never in any danger. To this day a good thunderboomer is one of my favorite natural phenomena!

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.

Are You Really A Quilter?

In a crowded elevator, everyone got out except this elderly gentleman and me. He had a quilt badge on, so I knew he was part of the group.

"Do you really enjoy coming to quilt shows, or do you just get dragged along?"

He said, with a gleam in his eye, "Where else can I be in a room filled with women and lift up their skirts, look inside their jackets and vests, and they thank me for admiring their sewing?"

The Elevators Only Go Up!

At the Hyatt Regency in Houston, we gather every year for the International Quilt Festival. There are two banks of elevators facing each other. Many of us quilters were waiting on the ground floor for the elevators. When the elevator doors opened, a quilter next to me said, "Don't get in that elevator!" So I didn't.

"Why didn't we get in the elevator?" I wondered aloud.

"On this side the elevators don't go up," she replied

.I had to really think about this. "Where do these elevators go?" I asked."

They only go down."

Are you as confused as I was? After all, we were on the ground floor. My next question seemed obvious, "How do we get to our rooms?"

"The elevators on the other side go up," was her quick reply. So when one of them opened, we got in and went up. I am still totally confused by this. Did she think the elevators go up, across and then down?

Kaye on Whether or Not To Wash Your Fabric

I buy only high quality quilting fabric and NO I do not wash my fabrics.

Fabrics used to shrink and the color would run. That no longer happens with good fabric.But many quilters do wash their fabrics.So, the decision is yours. Either way, you will have lots of people who agree with you.

Q and A With Kaye....

Q: I thought pre wound bobbins were not for bed quilts as the thread was not strong enough. I was also told not to use lingerie thread for the same reason. What do you think?

A: I think it's a safe bet if you just use cotton or cotton-poly blend threads. These always work best for me and it doesn't matter how it's wound.

Q: Can you tell me where I can get two sided, hand press-able stabilizer to do landscape scenes? I have tried all over and can't seem to find any.

A: I would suggest you use Lite Steam a Seam 2. It would hold temporarily by hand pressing but to make a lasting hold, you would have to iron it. Click on the link to go there.

Q: I am searching for instructions on how to stipple. Can you help?

A: When you stipple, you cover the surface with close quilting stitches to give a dimpled effect. I am going to direct you to an expert on stipple. Just click the provided link and it will take you to the Sulky instruction page on how to stipple. Good luck.

Quilt Tips....

Seam Allowances for Hand and Machine Piecing.

It doesn't matter if you hand or machine piece. The question is whether you use templates or strip piecing. If you use templates, the template is usually the finished size and you need to add seam allowances. Hand piecers usually mark the finished size, which is the seam line. They then eyeball the 1/4" since the finished size is already marked. If you strip piece, don't worry about the seam allowance. It will eventually come off all sides of the piece.
