Q....If you tie a quilt using the sewing machine, would it be best to do that before doing the binding to make sure it lays nice and flat without any puckers....Louise
K....Machine tying your quilt can be done before or after the binding. Because you only sew each of the ties in place, the fabric layers won't move so there won't be any puckers.
Q: I am trying to learn free motion quilting. My upper thread keeps breaking no matter what needle or thread I use. What can you suggest?
K: The one thing that comes to mind is that maybe you are jerking the fabric while the needle is down in the quilt still. To avoid this, remember to always run your machine very fast and move your fabric very slow and steady.
Q: When counting the number of quilting stitches in an inch, do you count both front and back?
K: Both sides are counted. The easiest way to do this is to count one side and then just multiply by 2.
Quilt Trivia....
The origins of the traditional "Log Cabin" design can be traced back to British origins. It was most likely brought to America by Scottish and Irish emigrants.
"Shaking the Cat" meant that a cat was placed on a quilt and usually four girls would grasp the edges and shake the quilt. When the cat jumped off, the girl closest to the cat would marry next!

During the 18th century, very few quilts were entirely pieced. If there was no applique in the center of the quilt, it was added to the border.
