What's New....

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.

Eating in Restaurants

You Wouldn't Like What You Ordered

Has this ever happened to you?

Four of us ordered our food, and we all ordered something different. When our dinner arrived, I had the same thing as one of the other people.

"Is this what I ordered?"

The waiter said, "You wouldn't have like what you ordered."

Chicken in a Bowl

What would you think that was? I thought it would be like a chicken pot pie, so I ordered it.

Wrong!

The waitress asked, "Are you sure that's what you want? It's a chicken in a bowl."

And that is what it was. A whole chicken sitting in a bowl of clear broth.

If I had had the same waiter as above, he would have said nothing, just brought me something else to eat.

Amish Quilt Trivia....

The Amish did not bring quilt-making to America. they learned it from their "English" neighbors.

Quilts are the third-largest source of income for the Amish, after farming and woodworking; most Amish women quilt during the winter months, when gardening and farming chores have subsided.

Quilts are a traditional Amish wedding gift. Most women give each child at least one quilt to take to their new home.

When a family moves to a new Amish settlement, they may have to sell their quilts or store them away if they do not conform to the unwritten rules of the new church district.

Q and A With Kaye....

Q: How do you add more inches to the width of a quilt that is already done.

A: You have to add strips of fabric and batting. First you have to remove the binding either by taking out the stitches or cutting it off.

Then sew 1 strip right side to the top, sew 1 strip, right side to the back with your batting underneath. Open up the strips and the batting is in the middle.

Continue to add in this manner until the quilt is as big as you desire.

Bind as usual.

Q: What is the best way to wash a large amount of flannel before it's used for quilt backing?

A: Before you wash, accordion fold the fabric together and pin the selvedge edges using large pins. This will make it easier to handle before

and after it is washed.

Have a great week, everyone!

Have a GR8 Labor Day Weekend, and if you happen to be in Isaac's path, please stay safe!

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.

Four Hours To Go Five Blocks

While working at my booth at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, a shelf holding a quilt fell and hit me between the eyes. I was a little dizzy, but I had a class to teach so medical care could wait.

There were twice as many students in class as had registered, or could it be that I was seeing double?

My mind must have been on automatic because I don't remember anything I said during the class, but my assistant said she didn't know anything was wrong with me.

After class, the staff at the festival insisted I go to the hospital. That is where the comedy of errors begins.

We had to ride the bus back to the hotel to pick up the rental car. On the way to the hotel, the bus was in a minor accident. The staff member accompanying me was outside with the police when the bus driver left to go to the hotel.

I got off at the hotel and waited for the staff member in the lobby. After she arrived, she realized she didn't have the keys to the car so we took a cab to the hospital.

Four house after we left the convention center, the doctor treated me and wrote his report: slight concussion and nose broken by falling quilt. (Everybody's a comedian).

While leaving the hospital, I looked out a window, and what did I see? The convention center only four or five blocks away. We could have walked to the hospital.

Pinwheel Potholders

If you cook, these are pot holders; if you don't cook, they are kitchen quilts.

A pinwheel quilt block is made from four rectangle squares. make two different pot holders with plain backs, or use one of the potholders for the front and one for the back.

The segments in each of the blocks are made the same, but the sewing steps are different.

More On Buttons....

Legend has it that buttons on men's jacket sleeves date back tothe time of Napoleon Bonaparte. He wanted the men's uniforms to stay clean, and so to keep the men from wiping their noses on their sleeves (yuck!), he ordered buttons sewn over the top of the cuffs. With time the look became fashionable and carried over to civilians' jackets, with the buttons moved to the side.

Sharon says.... What I have always been told is that the reason the buttons were fastened different for men and women was that women rode side saddle and always had their right side toward the front of the horse and the wind didn't blow into the clothes/coat with the right side over the left. Men it didn't matter....

The zipper was desgined in 1893 by Whitcomb Judson to end the tedium of buttoning shoes and boots. It was soon adapted for skirts and trousers.

Show 'N Tell....

I want to show you a group of young quilters. I wrote a grant with the CO. Quilting Council for 6 kids to make the Rail Fence Lap top quilt design. To be held at the Erie Arts Coalition, Erie, CO.

So we had 6 kids ages from 6 to 9 working 3 mornings on their lap top quilt (of course they did their own thing).

They were introduced to quilting which was my reason for having class. They had such a good time and the last day they wrapped their quilts around themselves and danced around the room. It was so neat. Just wanted to share these lovely kids and their quilts!....Ann

Q and A With Kaye....

Q: If I put a wall hanging in the kitchen area, what is the best way to try and keep it clean?
K: If it were me, I would use Scotch Guard on it before hanging.

Q: After cutting my strips with a rotary cutter, I notice that they bow in the middle. How can I prevent this?
K: Fold the strips in half and cut at right angles to the fold. You have to check them constantly and make sure the angles are accurate.

Q: Do you sell your products internationally?
K: Yes, we ship anywhere in the world. Contact us with what you want to order and we'll get you a shipping quote.

Ida is looking for Quilt From Yesterday's Peony Pattern or any floral patterns. Email her here: jwcrosson@cox.net

Evelyn is looking for some girlie type dinosaur fabric. Email her here: Evelyn.Saput@muskegonsheriff.com

Q: Why can't we get your shows on TV anymore
K: We aren't producting TV shows anymore, they are simply too expensive, so all of our shows are on our YouTube Channel!

Shirley says: Mother made we 3 girls everything we wore in the 1930's, some cut out of donated garments and coats for the material left in them. She did it on a Singer table top machine which I still have, lid in tact. Not sure it's a cast iron as I haven't looked at it in some years. I still recall the day she ran the needle through her finger while lovingly working on one of our dresses. All I know is it was used as if on a production line. It will eventually pass on to one of my daughters who is a quilter and a talented seamstress. Reading about the awful destruction of the old models described by one of your correspondents triggered my thoughts about mother's machine which I cherish along with all the memories. What a sad story about one of the world's most famous names in the home sewing industry.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.

Since You're Not Busy....

One of my staff got sick while working at our booth at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. She was really dizzy and lost vision in one eye. The diagnosis from the doctor at the hospital was a migraine.

The paramedics arrived and were treating her. I was holding her hand, trying to calm her down, when a quilter reached around the paramedic and under my arm to ask if I would autograph her book since I wasn't doing anything.

Throw Mama From The Train....

The European trains are great, but they don't allow much time to enter and exit. I had my crutches, wheelchair and two suitcases. Finally, we had a system; my two friends would throw the wheelchair, crutches, and our suitcases out while I got myself out of the door.

More On Buttons....

Another good way to remember men's and women's button placket placement is to think of when you are riding in the car with your husband or boyfriend driving. You should be able to see into each other's shirts....Lynette

And why are women's buttons placed opposite to men's?

One story goes that when garments with buttons were first introduced, only wealthy women could afford to have them. These women did not dress themselves, but were aided by servants. the buttons and buttonholes were positioned for the speed of the servant who was doing the buttoning.

FOOT NOTE

This foot was made for walking, but not on my machine.
It turns out the weirdest quilting, that I have ever seen!
It sews along quite nicely, I stop holding my breath.
Then it does a little dance step and scares me half to death!
I see a section of stitches, too small for ripping out.
Then a leap and then a skip--what is this all about?
A seam on top? The batting? Am I doing something wrong?
I didn't dream that machine quilting, would ever take this long.
The answer's out there somewhere, I'll seek till I understand,
But until I get it sorted out, I just must quilt by hand!

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

During a consumer show, the vendor in the next booth was doing a demonstration. A gentleman watched for quite a while, then asked, "Do you really need to know anything to be able to do this?"
Unsure of how to answer, she said, "Not really. It is pretty easy."

"Good. I'll be back in a minute." He hurried down the aisle yelling, "Helen I found something you can do."

Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.

Are You Really A Quilter?
In a crowded elevator, everyone got out except this elderly gentleman and myself. He had a quilt badge on, so I knew he was part of the group.
"Do you really enjoy coming to the quilt shows, or do you just get dragged along?"
He said, with a gleam in his eye, "Where else can I be in a room filled with women and lift up their skirts, look inside their jackets and vests, and they thank me for admiring their sewing?"
It really happened, I swear!

In 18th century France, Joseph-Marie Jacquard invented the first automatic loom which used punch cards to create complex, precise patterns in fabric. Many people regard this invention as the first great step toward the development of computer technology....Leah Dicker.

Show 'N Tell....

I have always wanted to make a Grandmothers Flower Garden but I had no idea what I was in for. I cut 2 1/2" hexagons, sewed them all by hand, then hand quilted my quilt. The only part I used the machine on was the binding. This was a job for sure. I love how it come out and it fits my queen size bed perfectly. But never again lol. I hope you like it....Donna

On Drug Stores

While teaching in The Hague in Holland, a friend of mine got sick, and we had to call the hotel doctor. He wrote a prescription, and another friend took a cab to the drug store.

NO, NO, NO1 The drus store is where they sell drugs; prescriptions are filled at the pharmacy!

A sign posted outside a drug store in Amsterdam: "5397 miles to Wall Drug Store, South Dakota."

Wow! I bet they can't wait to see that drug store!

Singer Sewing Machines....

Mother made we 3 girls everything we wore in the 1930's, some cut out of donated garments and coats for the material left in them. She did it on a Singer table top machine which I still have, lid intact. What a sad story about one of the world's most famous names in the home sewing industry....Shirley

It was the first time he used the Starmaker 6. It not only won 1st Place in the Jefferson County Fair in the Senior Youth division but also Grand Champion for 18 and under! Quite proud of him!
