Tips and Humor From Kaye....

From one of Kaye's Quilting Cruises to the San Blas Islands

The Cuna Indians of the San Blas Islands have some interesting traditions.

Each family lives on it's own island. The shopping island, which is only used when the cruisers come to visit, had two things that were really interesting to me: an airport and a blue hut on the dock.

The island is very small and only very small airplanes can land at the airport. The control tower is a bamboo tower. If the plane misses the really short runway, it will be in the water.

The blue hut on the dock is the outhouse. It has a hole that empties right itno the water. I asked about pollution, but they assured me that they swam on the other side of the island and the currents ran away from the island.

(How can you NOT want to go on one of these cruises???)

Fun Facts For Today, June 20, 2012....

On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the thirty-fifth state in the Union. The land that formed the new state formerly constituted part of Virginia. The two areas had diverged culturally from their first years of European settlement, as small farmers generally settled the western portion of the state, including the counties that later formed West Virginia, while the eastern portion was dominated by a powerful minority class of wealthy slaveholders. There were proposals for the trans-Allegheny west to separate from Virginia as early as 1769. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, the residents of a number of contiguous western counties, where there were few slaves, decided to remain in the Union. Congress accepted these counties as the state of West Virginia on condition that its slaves be freed. "Montani semper liberi," "mountaineers always freemen," became the new state's motto.

But tomorrow..... is the Summer Solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere)!

This is my updated version of Kaye's Chrysanthemum/Dresden Plate quilt.

I much prefer the bright neon colors. The other blocks will be blue shades like the background and a bright green. I can't wait to finish it!

June is Summer Solstice Month....

Summer Solstice Fun Facts

Pagans called the Midsummer moon the "Honey Moon" for the mead made from fermented honey that was part of wedding ceremonies performed at the Summer Solstice.

Ancient Pagans celebrated Midsummer with bonfires, when couples would leap through the flames, believing their crops would grow as high as the couples were able to jump.

Midsummer was thought to be a time of magic, when evil spirits were said to appear. To thwart them, Pagans often wore protective garlands of herbs and flowers. One of the most powerful of them was a plant called 'chase-devil', which is known today as St. John's Wort and still used by modern herbalists as a mood stabilizer.

Get out and enjoy the sun, and if you happen to be in the Southern Hemisphere, enjoy the fact that this is your shortest day of the year, and it only gets better from here!

Have a great week, everyone!
