Tips and Humor From Kaye....

From one of Kaye's Quilting Cruises to the San Blas Islands

The Cuna Indians of the San Blas Islands are known for molas, which they bring to their shopping island for the cruisers.

As our ship arrived, the Cunas paddled their dugout canoes to the cruise ship. These primitive people have really figured this cruise business out. They shouted "money, money, money" and we all threw money to them. What a concept!

Some of the coins went in the upside down umbrellas they used, but some money went into the water. So these primitive Indians put on their fins and masks and dove for the money.

While looking into the culture of these unique people I found a website with some really interesting info.

How To Fussy Cut With Kaye's View & Do Shapes....

(This works with any of the 7 View & Do Shapes in any of the sizes!)

1. Center your fabric design inside the opening of the 8" Shape.

2. After centering the design inside the opening of the 8" Shape, place the 6" Shape inside this opening.

3. Remove the 8" Shape.

4. Rotary cut around the outside of the 6" Shape.

The fabric motif will be centered.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

From one of Kaye's Quilting Cruises to the San Blas Islands

The Cuna Indians of the San Blas Islands have some interesting traditions.

Each family lives on it's own island. The shopping island, which is only used when the cruisers come to visit, had two things that were really interesting to me: an airport and a blue hut on the dock.

The island is very small and only very small airplanes can land at the airport. The control tower is a bamboo tower. If the plane misses the really short runway, it will be in the water.

The blue hut on the dock is the outhouse. It has a hole that empties right itno the water. I asked about pollution, but they assured me that they swam on the other side of the island and the currents ran away from the island.

(How can you NOT want to go on one of these cruises???)

Fun Facts For Today, June 20, 2012....

On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the thirty-fifth state in the Union. The land that formed the new state formerly constituted part of Virginia. The two areas had diverged culturally from their first years of European settlement, as small farmers generally settled the western portion of the state, including the counties that later formed West Virginia, while the eastern portion was dominated by a powerful minority class of wealthy slaveholders. There were proposals for the trans-Allegheny west to separate from Virginia as early as 1769. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, the residents of a number of contiguous western counties, where there were few slaves, decided to remain in the Union. Congress accepted these counties as the state of West Virginia on condition that its slaves be freed. "Montani semper liberi," "mountaineers always freemen," became the new state's motto.

June is Summer Solstice Month....

Summer Solstice Fun Facts

Pagans called the Midsummer moon the "Honey Moon" for the mead made from fermented honey that was part of wedding ceremonies performed at the Summer Solstice.

Ancient Pagans celebrated Midsummer with bonfires, when couples would leap through the flames, believing their crops would grow as high as the couples were able to jump.

Midsummer was thought to be a time of magic, when evil spirits were said to appear. To thwart them, Pagans often wore protective garlands of herbs and flowers. One of the most powerful of them was a plant called 'chase-devil', which is known today as St. John's Wort and still used by modern herbalists as a mood stabilizer.

Get out and enjoy the sun, and if you happen to be in the Southern Hemisphere, enjoy the fact that this is your shortest day of the year, and it only gets better from here!

Have a great week, everyone!

So I did my internet search to find out what "fun" day June 14th was and I found it was Valentine's Day. Not sure, but it's a bit too green outside to be February, I mean, I know it's the 14th but I'm thinking someone messed up!

Upon looking a bit further I found out that today is also Flag Day! Not even going to say, "Who Knew" because, since I tend to live under a rock I'm sure everyone knew that but me. So, Flag Day it is (And the Army's Birthday too)!

What's New....

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

My "Free" Quilt

I use leftover pieces from some of my other projects so the fabric is really "free."

As I work on projects, I cut small leftover pieces into 2", 3", or 4" wide pieces, all different lengths. I also save extra strips that have been cut, which I cut into lengths from 4" to 10".

I sew the same width strips (all 2" or all 3") into a long stripk roll the strip up and put a rubber band around it. More pieces are added to the roll as I finish each project.

When I want to amke a No-Problem Scrap Quilt, I cut the lengths that I need from the roll.

Any kind of fabric works wlell; even those double knits you can't stand to throw away can be used. Cottons, poly-cotton, denim, or flannel are also good choices.

To sew these into a "No Problem" quilt, start at one end of the roll and cut the strip when it's long enough. Then start at the beginning again with the roll and sew it lengthwise to the first strip. Then do it again. You can't mess this up! You couldn't match these seams if you tried.

No-Problem Quilts! And... they're free!

Fun Facts For Today, June 14, 2012....

Why is it Flag Day?

1777 - The Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the "Stars and Stripes" as the national flag of the United States.

What In The World Is A Charm Square?

Charm squares usually measure between 2" and 6" square. They're popular for making small projects or scrap quilts; and since they're usually coordinating prints and solids, they're so easy to use. Lots better than lugging around bolts of fabric!

Nancy Zieman of Nancy's Notions gives you a quick project to do using your charm squares on You Tube, HERE

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

In the Quilter's Dream World, the rows would all be the same length. But we live in the Real World. The rows may not be the same length, and that's ok. Since quilting is supposedto be fun, and ripping out is not fun we are NOT going to rip things out! To make this easier, trim longer strips so all strips are the same length. Trim an equal amount from the top and bottom of each strip. But, to help improve your skills, there are reasons why the rows may not be the same length.
  • Were the strips all cut the same width and cut accurately?
  • Were the seam allownces all the same?
  • Did you press with steam, from the right side of the fabric?

Fun Facts For Today, June 6, 2012....

June 6 - In a very early draft of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones carried brass knuckles instead of a bullwhip.

On Zippers....

The "Hookless Fastener" invented by Gideon Sundback doesn't really have the right ring to it when it comes to marketing the product today, although back in 1914 it probably sounded fine. Early versions of the product were used in the First War and, as with many products, the exposure received in such times may well have laid a good foundation for the product to be more popular when times became less troubled. The development of the product showed a logical and systematic approach that might be expected to result in a successful invention - an invention that met a series of needs - of both the consumer and the manufacturers who would have to make it in large numbers.A manufacturer of boots placed an order for the fastener and so helped it's popularity but the fastener was only eventually used in clothes production during the 1930's. The original inventor of the "zip" was Elias Howe (1851 patent) (who incidentally also invented the sewing machine) with an improvement to the zip by Whitcomb Judson in 1891, although his version depended more on a hook and eye system that was opened and closed with a slider. His design was for boots and it is ironic that the order for Sundback's fastener took off because of an order from a boot company too.
