The pattern includes full size pattern pieces and comes with a unique "Mitten Minder" set which allows you to hook these oversized beauties onto your purse strap. To loose one would be a pity.

Square Knot Quilting Pattern by Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl Designs.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

We all have more than one project going at a time. I take a simple project and when I would need to cut the thread, I simply take that easy pattern and sew one piece of the block. Before you know it, you have another block completed.....Sandy

I keep a canvas 'sewing bag' ready to grab if I think I might have some time to wile away. I've drug it on road trips where I may not have to drive all of the time, track meets for my children where you often have time between events (and most teens do not like a hovering parent), sitting in a hospital room, etc. over the years. This helps me to not get anxious about all I should be doing at home. I always have scissors, various types of thread, and needles, cross stitch books, quilting magazines, patterns I want to study, and a couple of small unfinished projects in it. It has traveled over many miles and years of events with me. This idea has often kept me feeling content and productive....Mary Alice

Did You Know....

Thread has been an important staple all through history, ever since the first garments were made. Strips of animal hide served as the first thread, holding the larger pieces of hides and fur together. History states that the Egyptians were among the first to spin thread using plant fibers, but also utilizing wool and hair from domestic animals. In later decades, the Japanese and Chinese discovered the beauty of silk fibers spun as thread and made into cloth.
By the Middle Ages with the opening of the Silk Road to Asia, as well as vast improvements in processing and shipping wool, many new forms of popular needlework were started, including woven tapestries.
With the Industrial Revolution, thread making moved out of the home and into the factories, equipped with high speed machines. These machines allowed thread to be made faster and with fewer flaws. Manufacturers experimented with many types of fibers, till a wider variety of threads, that were stronger and more diverse in color were created.
These days, there are three basic types of thread created, based on their origin of either animal, plant or synthetic. Silk thread is decidedly the best because of it's strength and elasticity. Silk is often woven onto regular threads for added strength, while pure silk thread is used in finer clothing. Cotton threads are the most common and are made from the cellulose of plants. Cotton threads could shrink and they do not stretch. Nylon and polyester threads are used for synthetics and stretch knits and do not shrink.
Thread has gone through vast changes over the years becoming a staple we cannot do without. Whether it be clothing, blankets, etc., thread will help keep it together.

Hi Quilters!
Grapes!

Yes, grapes. And grapevines, and collecting seeds for grasses, vegetables and flowers. That's what happens this time of year. And making ***, and apple sauces and butters. Fall is certainly a busy time of the year on the farm. No rest at all; that is until Winter sets in. Then we have blissful days in front of the woodstove, curled up on the couch with our Charisma Slippers and our quilting. And hot cocoa too! Don't forget the hot cocoa.

It's not too early....

Christmas Tree Skirt

from the ebook, Stars Made Simple, and using the View & Do Hexagon and Starmaker 6 Master Template!

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I like to place a small folded square of fabric (1 to 2 inch square) under the sewing machine needle when starting to sew a new strip and also end the seam on another folded fabric square. When you are doing a lot of sewing or strip piecing it keeps from having to cut the thread each time and saves thread. I was bad about unthreading my sewing machine when I finished a seam, but once I started doing this, I don't have to stop and re-thread my machine.....Kay

When cutting pieces for a project I use cheep paper plates for each piece. I write the size, color, where it is used right on the plate so that there is no question where it belongs. The plates stack on top of each other nicely and fit in a zipper gallon bag along with my working copy of the pattern, which I always photocopy so I can make and notes of changes such as color position etc.The plates can be reused until there is no place to write (scratch out the old)... then some of the cheaper ones can be turned over & pushed to use the other side. I also use pages out of the old phone book for paper piecing as it is just the right weight & helps to recycle those tomes!....Dorothy

    I've Learned...

Maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them, and less with how many birthdays you've celebrated.
No matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't stop for your grief.
We don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.
If you don't want to forget something, stick it in your underwear drawer.
No matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves, get farther in life.
The people you care about most in life, are taken from you too soon.

    Hi Quilters!
It's that time of year again!

The leaves are starting to put on their autumn colors and the air has a decidely bit of bite to it. While the sun is warm enough, the air is chilly. The apples are starting to fall, the pumpkins are getting bigger, and with the ferns and wildflowers in the woods, dying, you can see deeper and deeper into the woods. The deer are on the move, and the bear tracks are becoming more and more visible. Yup! Winter's coming. Tonight will likely bring the last canner load of tomatoes and while there hasn't been a frost yet, that will come soon enough.

    Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

When making blocks of the month or blocks from scraps that will later be put together to make a quilt, I store them in a pizza box! I went to the local pizza house and asked if I could have a couple of empty pizza boxes (I was willing to pay for them). They gave me four for free. Works out great and my blocks are laid flat for storage until I'm ready to use them....Muriel

If you have a friend ( or yourself ) who has horses, the big zippered bags with handles that the winter blankets come in are great for storing leftover batting. They are square and can sit in a corner until you can sew the pieces together with your walking foot later....Melinda

    Hi Quilters!
A lot of you have asked about the inspiration behind the pictures in the newsletters. Very simply, they are what's going on in our lives up here at that particular time of the year. This week you'll see farm pics in autumn, cord wood stacked up, mums and the wildflower of Summer's last hurrah - the goldenrod. Enjoy them! They are always courtesy of Google Images!

    Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

When making a quilt for somebody special I always try to use material that matches their personality or pick something that reflects their likes or hobbies. This way it is truly made just for them and they really seem to treasure the quilt, just as I do them.

Is this a sewing or a gardening tip? I save all my selvage strips and wind them onto an ever-growing ball (kinda like those rubber band balls) then it comes out to the garden with me and I use them to tie up vegetables and raspberry vines. It gives a little quirky color to the veg garden....Robin

A special THANKS to the folks at Quilts Like Crazy for this article on Sewing Machine Maintenance!
    • Proper machine maintenance can help you avoid many of the problems that occur. Because there are a variety of machines, the following is a basic checklist to use as a guide only:
Keep your machine covered when not in use. Everyday dust can find its way into the smallest crevices and if you have pets you know all about that pet hair.
Keep your machine unplugged when not in use. A power surge could really damage those boards.
Use the bobbins that are recommended for the machine. There are plenty of generic brands, but why take the chance.
Use the proper needle for the fabric that is being sewn.

Change your needle at least every 8 hours of sewing. Occasionally, even a new needle will have a defect, so if you are sewing and hear a "tick, tick, tick" or other strange sound - change the needle. Needles are inexpensive compared to the machine.
Clean the tension discs by raising the pressure foot to release the tension. Run a lint free cloth through the discs.
After completing each project, open the areas that are accessible and clean with the lint brush that was provided with your machine.
Read the Manual that came with the machine for the suggested maintenance of your model.
Take your machine in for a "Well Check-up" at least once a year depending on the hours spent sewing. A certified repair person can check the timing and clean in areas that you cannot reach.
