Hi Quilters!
Do you get the urge to start more quilting projects in this weather? By this weather I mean the cool nights (ah, finally, some sleeping weather!) and the cooler days. Oh yes, the sun is warm but there's a defnite chill in the breeze.

Definitely time to spend more time with the quilting (and get the tomatoes canned, and processed, and, and, and.... lol)

The pictures are courtesy of Google Images. This is what some of the lakes up here are starting to look like!

Did You Know?
Here are some basic terms that relate to fabric, that you might find helpful.
Fabric Grain-This term refers to the way threads are arranged in a piece of fabric. The way you cut your fabric in relation to the grain, can make all the difference in the accuracy and ease of assembly to your blocks.

Warp Threads-These are the long threads that continually run the length of your fabric, as it comes off the bolt. Otherwise known as the fabric's lengthwise grain.
Weft Threads-These are the threads that was woven back and forth, perpendicular to the warp threads, along the entire length of the bolt. Otherwise known as the crosswise grain.
Straight Grain-The lengthwise threads of the fabric are regarded as the straight-of-grain.
Selvages-These are the bound, finished edges, that run along the outer edge of the fabric.
Fabric Bias-The thread line that is at a forty-five degree angle, to the lengthwise and crosswise grain of the fabric, as it is on the bolt.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Don't be afraid to try a new technique, if you find you really don't care for it you can always make a mug rug or pot holder from the block...Connie

I have had a problem when inserting a needle into my machine, it has a tendency to turn. I sew a lot of lap quilts for the kids at Shriners. I sew late at night the best time. However, the light is not the best. This has been very frustrating. It suddenly occurred to me to insert the needle threader into the eye. This can be held straight in the right direction and needle inserted. No more problem...Marian

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

When buying fabric for a new quilt, be sure you buy a bit extra. Fabric designs are frequently changed and if your pattern directions didn't figure the right amount, you can find yourself in trouble in a hurry. Also allow plenty for the change in size i.e. full to queen size. The extra if you have any, can be used for shams, pillows or other accessories.....Joanne

Be very exact in getting your seam allowance right.......Judy

Hi Quilters!
In a few minutes I will be off to Fairbanks, through Saginaw, Detroit and Seattle.
When I leave Fairbanks in about a week, I will fly to Anchorage, Juneau, Sitka and then on to Ketchikan. This will be the first time I have taught in Alaska, but not the first time I have visited this awesome state.

Alaska is great this time of the year, but I don't think I would like the darkness and cold in the winter. Lots of quilts would have to be used.

This Week on KayeWoodTV.com!

Since I messed up on last week's links, we're going to feature Elisa Wilson's Square Me Up Ruler again this week!

Eilsa's Square Me Up Ruler uses popular 10" and 5" squares of fabric to give you quick and accurate half-square triangles in 4 1/2 (4" finished size) and 2" (1 1/2" finished size). Watch her technique!

Then, check out Elisa's Square Me Up Ruler!

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Always look at the block construction before you start. I recently made a quilt that could have been easier if I had looked at what was going on. Instead of working with half triangles, I could have made squares for the block. It would have eliminated a lot of the seams and made matching a breeze. And measuring twice is always a good idea.....Debbie

I'm just starting my first quilt and the best thing I've done so far is re-read the directions several times. I've already caught a few mistakes before they turned into big problems......Stephanie

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Read the pattern twice, lay out all of the tools needed and press/starch fabric before cutting....Catie

I inherited approx 25 unquilted quilt tops from my grandmother. She passed away about 28 years ago and I know most of them were made between 30 and 60 years ago. Unfortunately Grandma didn't mark any of them with her name and date. My tip is to always mark, or attach label to your quilts indicating who made them, date made, name of the pattern, and any other pertinent info. Whoever later recieves the quilts will greatly appreciate the info.....Billie

Hi Quilters!
Well as crazy as our winter was and as hot as our summer has been, there's no telling what's next. Typically around the middle of August we start to notice little things like the ferns in the forests dying off, the first tinges of the earliest maple leaves changing, impending winter types of stuff. So because our winter was so long, and our summer has been so hot I figured fall was a ways off. Not so! On my way to the office just this morning, I saw the first signs of a dying fern. Not good! Not good at all. But what to do? Well, we'll just take it with a grain of salt and start our autumn celebrations like we do every year.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Vivian mentioned the 'bird nests' that can form when starting stitching if you don't hold your thread. I always use a 'startie' and 'stoppie' when machine piecing. That is a small scrap of fabric you stitch through at the beginning of machine piecing; chain sew until you reach the end of that series of piecing and stitch through a 'stoppie' and you are ready for the next series of machine piecing.....Sue

Measure twice, cut once. Masking tape and the floor make for the best place to stretch and pin a quilt. Angled (curved) safety pins are a fingernail saver....Lucy
