Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Several years ago somewhere I read a tip for sewing onto a piece of fabric when getting to the end of your seam to prevent the bird nests. Instead of using the same scrap over and over, use two pieces of fabric that you can use in a scrap quilt. I usually use 2 1/2" strip for binding, so I have a lot of those, which make wonderful half square triangles for a Friendship Star block. Two for one, quilt blocks, and no jamming....Eileen

When piecing a four-patch, after the four patches are sewn together undo the first two stitches on the first two-patches and second-two patches in the center of the block that have been sewn together. Press your seams in a pinwheel pattern and a small four-patch will form in the center of the block where you removed the stitches. This makes it much neater when pressing and for quilting....Sandra

Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative....

From August 1-10 the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) will be offering 20 quilts that were part of the "Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece" exhibit in an online auction. All profits fund Alzheimer's research.

Quilts made by Sue Nickels, Diane Gaudynski, Marsha McCloskey, Nancy Brenan Daniel, Melody Crust, Elsie Campbell, Debbie Bowles and others will be auctioned. This is a rare opportunity to acquire quilts by nationally acclaimed quilters who rarely sell their work. Own a quilt from the exhibit that has touched the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people.

Preview the quilts: http://www.alzquilts.org/quiltauction.html

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative is an all-volunteer national charity whose mission is to raise awareness and fund research through art. Ami Simms is the founder and executive director. Her mother had Alzheimer's.

Quilted or Tied?

Overwhelmingly, you prefer your quilts quilted rather than tied.

Here's what Kaye says about tying a quilt:

Have you ever tried tying a quilt? Tying can be used to just hold two layers together without any batting. I like these for summer quilts because they are very light weight. They are great for picnics and can be used as a tablecloth or used to sit on the grass or beach. Tying can also be used with many different weights of batting or flannel between the fabric. The thicker the batting, the more puffy the quilt.

Tying can be done by hand (this is the traditional way to do it) however, when I tie a quilt, I tie it by machine. I use ribbon or yarn. The bobbin thread matches the ribbon or yarn. The needle thread can be invisible or the same color as the ribbon or yarn. Drop the feed dogs on the machine. Set the machine for a satin stitch. Tack the ribbon or yarn in one of two ways: 1, tie the ribbon or yarn into a bow and zigzag over the middle or 2, lay the ribbon or yarn flat on the quilt and zigzag over it; then tie the ribbon or yarn into a bow.

This Week on KayeWoodTV.com!

Cutting Diamonds and Stars with Kaye's Starmaker Master Templates!

Kaye shows you how easy it is to cut and piece shapes with the Starmaker Master Templates.

And, this week, the whole 77 minute Starmaker Design Concepts DVD is on sale with the purchase of any of the Starmakers.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I always use a 'startie' and 'stoppie' when machine piecing. That is a small scrap of fabric you stitch through at the beginning of machine piecing; chain sew until you reach the end of that series of piecing and stitch through a 'stoppie' and you are ready for the next series of machine piecing....Sue

When piecing a four-patch, after the four patches are sewn together undo the first two stitches on the first two-patches and second-two patches in the center of the block that have been sewn together. Press your seams in a pinwheel pattern and a small four-patch will form in the center of the block where you removed the stitches. This makes it much neater when pressing and for quilting.....Sandra

Did You Know....

I don't know about you, but when it comes to fabric, I have always been in the dark. Here are some basic terms that relate to fabric, that you might find helpful.
Fabric Grain-This term refers to the way threads are arranged in a piece of fabric. The way you cut your fabric in relation to the grain, can make all the difference in the accuracy and ease of assembly to your blocks.
Warp Threads-These are the long threads that continually run the length of your fabric, as it comes off the bolt. Otherwise known as the fabric's lengthwise grain.
Weft Threads-These are the threads that was woven back and forth, perpendicular to the warp threads, along the entire length of the bolt. Otherwise known as the crosswise grain.
Straight Grain-The lengthwise threads of the fabric are regarded as the straight-of-grain.
Selvages-These are the bound, finished edges, that run along the outer edge of the fabric.
Fabric Bias-The thread line that is at a forty-five degree angle, to the lengthwise and crosswise grain of the fabric, as it is on the bolt.

July 13 - This Day In History....

1787 - The Continental Congress enacts the Northwest Ordinance establishing governing rules for the Northwest Territory.

1923 - The Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, Los Angeles. It originally reads "Hollywoodland " but the four last letters are dropped after renovation in 1949.

1977 - New York City, amidst a period of financial and social turmoil experiences a blackout lasting nearly 24 hours that leads to widespread fires and looting.
