Hi Quilters! I am really excited about teaching in Alaska on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. While I have been there several times, this will be my first time to present a seminar in Fairbanks. I love Alaska in the summer; the last time I was there it was in the 90's and I got a sunburn. We have a limited number of seats, so if you are planning to join us, you better register as soon as possible. And, next year our quilting cruise will be to Alaska. Ship leaves Seattle on June 2, 2012. Barbeques, Parades, Splashing in the lake, and Fireworks. However you celebrate the 4th, be sure to stay safe, and have a great time!

When adding binding, leave a quarter inch of batting when trimming to pad the binding. It makes for a nicer edge......Kathy I use green painter's tape to mark lines on my quilts to hand quilt. You can get the tape in 1/4", 1/2" and so on. It leaves no mark on your quilt and actually helps to keep stitches straight....Meme

Call your PBS, cable and satellite providers and ask them. If they don't show it, ask them to add it to their lineup. Our shows are called Kaye's Quilting Friends and Quilting The Kaye Wood Way.
Little Known Independence Day Facts....The Real Independence Day?  The Declaration of Independence was announced on July 4th, though the formal signing didn't occur until August 2nd, and the colonies actually voted to accept it on July 2nd. So you may wonder - what day is the real Independence Day? Old Glory Did you know, that there have been 28 versions of the U.S flag to date, and that the most recent one, designed after Alaska and Hawaii joined the union, was the result of a school project? Robert Heft was 17 when he came up with the flag design in 1958. He originally got a B- on the project, but when his pattern won the national competition to become the next flag, his teacher raised his grade to an A. A Patriotic Death? Three American presidents have died on the fourth of July. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day, in 1826. They had been rivals in everything, even about who would live longest. Adams' last words were about his long-time foe: "Thomas Jefferson lives!" In fact, Jefferson had died just five hours earlier, but Adams hadn't gotten the message. James Monroe is the third president to die on July 4th, but he died in 1831. From the Farmer's Almanac....

Hi Quilters!

The Quilting, Stitches and Crafts Expo is coming to Reno on June 30-July 2, 2011 at the Nevada Conference & Exhibit Center in the Grand Sierra Resort. I hope you will join me there. My booth is #516.

The day before the show you can take my Teacher Certification class.
Learn hands-on Kaye's original techniques for easier and more accurate quiltmaking.
Teach your students how to eliminate the slow-downs. Register for this class at www.qscexpos.com

After certification, you set up your own classes and set your own fees.

Then, on June 30, the fun of the Expo starts. There are lots of hand-on classes, lectures and different events during the day and fun-filled evening shows. Several of the teachers have been on my TV show, Kaye's Quilting Friends. These shows are always like a reunion. It is a great place for you to get autographs and photos for your next "celebrity" quilt or wallhanging. The vendors are all my friends and they want to be your friend also. That's what quilting is all about.

Each day of the show I will be doing two seminars (lecture/demos):
How to easily match those points in patchwork, usually without pins.
How to incorporate Fussy-cutting into your quilts.

Register at www.qscexpos.com

And if Reno is out of the question, you might want to join me in Fairbanks, Alaska in August or on an Alaskan cruise in June 2012.

Hope to see you somewhere.

Kaye On TV....

We get a lot of phone calls and emails asking where to find Kaye on their TV. The simple answer is we don't know, (sorry). Here's what to do. Call your PBS, cable and satellite providers and ask them. If they don't show it, ask them to add it to their lineup. Our shows are called Kaye's Quilting Friends and Quilting The Kaye Wood Way.

We Wanted To Know About Thimbles, and you told us!

You run the gammut from not liking or needing one, to leather, steel (with and without indentations). Even wooden ones. One reader has an extensive collection and not only displays them, but uses them too!

One reader even sent in her version of the origin of the thimble! Thanks, Joanne!

The origin of the thimble is believed to be Dutch and originally was worn on the thumb, probably by tailors. The English pronunciation of thumb-ball became thimble. Other nationalities transferred it to the index finger where most often worn today.

I think we've created a monster! See our new "logo"? Well, awhile back, on Facebook, there was a time when everyone changed their profile pics to their favorite cartoon character, and this was Kaye's. She's liked it so much that she's keeping it. So, here's a special thanks to the folks at Looney Tunes who created the Tweety Bird and Sylvester cartoon for "Granny"!

Have a great week from The staff at Kaye Wood, Inc!

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

I've been trying to make this "Quarter Quilt" (Brick Path) using one of Kaye Wood's patterns for quite a while now. I was sure that I could whip it up in a weekend - and if I hadn't been interrupted a kazillion times, I might have done it. But, I put the last stitches in the binding tonight, and voila! a new Quarter Quilt for the spare room.

It even matches the comforter quite nicely! Of course, the comforter will be coming off when the nice weather finally makes it’s way to us.

The last QQ I made was flowery and I used a rose-red fabric - and seeing as the spare room is most often used by my son, I thought it needed something a little more manly.

I loved how this pattern went together too - there's a "twist" in the instructions, and I thought that was the most fun part - but you'll have to order the pattern to find out what the twist is! The first pic is a close-up of the fabrics and the pattern; the 2nd is a pic of it on the bed.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Whenever I make a quilt or project, I will be taking a picture of it before I send it off to the long arm quilter. Ask me how I learned this trick. Just recently finished a king size colorwash trip around the world, sent it to the quilter and put the binding and label on it when it returned. So excited to bring it to it's new owner. It was beautiful all in oriental fabrics. Had my husband and a friend hold it over my loft so I could take a picture of it. Packed it up and then decided I'd print out the picture. That's when I discovered that 10 squares were out of position. This quilt had 3127 - 1.5" squares and those 10 stood out like a sore thumb. The worst part was that I'd shown it to at least a dozen people before and after the quilting and no one saw the bad strip. It was only from the picture that I discovered the problem. Hard lesson learned the hard way....Jeannette

We Want To Know....

Wikipedia says a thimble is a small hard pitted cup worn for protection on the finger that pushes the needle in sewing and quilting.

We want to know... what kind of a thimble do you use?

I've Learned....

...credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.
...your life can be changed in a matter of hours, by people who don't even know you.
...the clothes I like best are the ones with the most holes in them.
...it's not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts.
...two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.
...it takes years to build up trust and only seconds to destroy it.
...you can do something in an instant that will give you a heartache for life.
...even when you think you have no more to give, when a friends cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

I think that's all for this week. Have a great week. Hope to see you in Alaska in August!

Hi to the Quilters in Alaska
August in Alaska is terrific. Those of you who haven't been to Fairbanks would be surprised at how warm it gets, sometimes in the 80's. I have been told by experts that the Fairbanks area is the hottest and the coldest place in Alaska, but I am not going to be there when it is the coldest.

My seminar day in Fairbanks is August 23, 2011, at the Fairbanks Princess Hotel. The price is only $45, which includes the day-long seminar and lunch. We are also working on setting up a seminar day in Anchorage; watch the website for more details.

During the seminar, you will see what's new! You've seen me strip my quilts on TV on Kaye's Quilting Friends. Now watch me strip in person.
Making quilts can be easier than you think with my original techniques.
There will be something for everyone-beginner to more advanced. Something for the Pointless and the Pointed people!
Lots of ideas for that next project!
Learn to eliminate the slow-downs in quiltmaking.

I will also share some of the funny stories that have happened to me on the road to quilting.

Games include Checkers, Mancala, Tic Tac Toe, Big Arc and Double Ring.

Size: 51" x 60"

This Week on KayeWoodTV.com!

Is it a quilt or a game board? It's both and you can have twice the fun, as you quilt it and then play the games with your family when it's done. Pattern instructions include how to makes curves without curved piecing, perfect intersections, and how to take those squares to your sewing machine in one piece.

Pre-printed fusible interfacing, enough for one quilt, and instructions for playing the games are also provided.

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

This quilt is a Madagascar print with green sashing and velvet cornerstones. It has freemotion topstitching. It was made for my great niece Suribrielle. She was born last September 2010....Jacqueline

I was asked to make this quilt for my daughter's best friend. Her mom's mom had died and the fabric in this quilt was from all her "retirement home" polyester dresses. Almost all the fabrics had shades of purple or rose in them. When my daughter's girlfriend picked up the quilt she burst into tears. Her gramma's name was Rose. She gave the quilt to her mom and it has a special place in their home, and lots of memories. Bottom line, a very ugly quilt can hold more beauty than one could imagine....Maureen

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I have found pipe cleaners to be essential in cleaning my machine. I especially like the heavier ones used for craft projects. They collect most dust and fibers wherever found in the machine. They even work well around the feed dogs when they are lowered, or the throat plate is removed....Jean

I've made several quilts and have learned 3 key steps: 1. measure twice, cut once 2. you cannot overpin 3. always iron your seams as you go. Your projects will always have a professional look to them....Gloria

I've Learned....

There are people who love you dearly, but just don't know how to show it.
Money is a lousy way of keeping score.
Learning to forgive takes practice.
Sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up.
You should never tell a child their dreams aren't possible, for what a tragedy it would be if they believed it.
Your best friend and you can do anything or nothing and still have the best time.
It isn't always enough to be forgiven, sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I think that's all for this week. Have a great week. Hope to see you in Alaska in August!
