Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin: We are gearing up for fall. There have been a couple of hard freeze scares, but so far we've dodged that bullet. All of the tomatoes are on the counters waiting to ripen so they can be canned, and next we turn our eyes toward apples, grapes, carrots and pumpkin. If you've never had a pumpkin pie with home canned pumpkin, you are truly missing out!

The urge to Start Another Quilt is overwhelming. I am a staunch supporter of the Un-Finished Objects (UFOs). I guess my hobby isn't quilting so much as it is starting projects!

This week the sale page features our Fall Themed Patterns.

Storing Your Quilts....

1. Quilts should be aired or vacuumed before storing. Use a low suction hand vac with a nylon screen to protect it from harmful pull. When airing, be sure the quilt is laying flat, protected from soil, and not in direct sunlight.

2. The ideal storage is a flat surface, properly lined with acid free material, large enough to have its own space.

3. When folding, use crumpled acid-free tissue in the folds for support. Refold the quilt every 3-6 months to minimize permanent fold lines. Rolling quilts is an option, but it does place stress on the entire quilt.

4. If the storage unit is made of wood or cardboard, it should be lined with several layers of washed, 100% cotton fabric. This is necessary to protect the fabric from chemicals in the wood or paper. Cotton liner should be washed semi-annually.

5. Covers of pre washed 100% cotton sheeting, muslin, pillow cases, or acid-free tissue paper are strongly recommended. These materials allow air to pass through and keep light and dust out. Plastic is not advised.

6. Keep the storage area clean and insect free. The herb Artemisia is a natural pesticide. Hang in the storage area or in a small bag. Do not let the bag touch the quilts!

My father turns 80 in April, 2012 and this is his birthday gift.

It's made for an extra high queen size bed. I didn't want to have a bed shirt so I made a bedspread. My oldest son has a bed just like his so I used his for measurements. (My father lives 5 hours away).

It looks really good on my son's bed. I'm glad I tried it on his bed because he is the next one in line to make one for. I'll probably put his two girls on, I don't know yet.

    Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : I saw a red leaf! Let me repeat that for those of you in apparant disbelief! I saw a red leaf. It was laying on the ground. It's not even August. Kaye's Favorite Gadgets....

My favorite sewing and quilting gadgets have got to be the Starmakers and the View & Do Shapes.

    • Clover rotary cutters & mats. (the blades stay sharp longer than any other blade I have used). My favorite is the 60mm.
    • Clover magnetic pin cushion with cover (the pins magnetically line up along the length of the pin cushion, instead of going in all different directions).
    • Just about anything Clover makes.
    • Janome sewing machine & serger. My machine cuts the thread automatically. I don't have to lift the presser foot; just start sewing and it lowers automatically; my knee lift raises the presser foot temporarily when needed.
    • My favorite Janome attachment is the Circle Stitcher.
    • My favorite gadgets (non-sewing & quilting) are:
    • I Phone (love, love Siri; GPS)
    • The Cloud so all my computer stuff syncs.
    • I Pad (I had to get one because my Kindle died)
    • IRobot vacuum cleaner (it cleans while I sew or nap)
    • Anything with a remote - car starter (so the AC kicks on), garage door opener, ceiling fan, TV, VCR, electric fireplace.

    What are your favorite gadgets?

Tips from Kaye on Easy Strip Piecing....

Strip piecing is easy. And it also means different things to different people.

When I tell people that most of what I do is strip piecing, I get responses such as, "I made a strip pieced quilt once". But once you sew strips together (hence the term "strip piecing"), where do you go from there?

My strips turn into stars, hexagons, wedges, kaleidoscopes, flying geese, depending on how the strips are cut.

I cut mine with one of my 3 Starmaker Master Templates to get hundreds of designs, most of which are shown in my cutting technique book and video, "Starmaker Design Concepts".

40 years after designing the Starmaker Master Templates, I am still coming up with new designs. So far, I have used them in numerous magazine articles, 26 books and over 50 patterns. And I am currently working on several more patterns.

My suggestion to quilters - when reading quilting books and magazines which give you templates to cut, is to lay one of the Starmakers on top of the template. If the Starmaker lines up with the shape of the template, switch to strip piecing and cut the shapes with the Starmaker. So much faster than making your own template, drawing around it and then cutting it out.
For more information, go to www.youtube.com/user/kayewood to watch my free videos to see how easy this type of quilt making can be.

    Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : It's HOT! Ok, so I'm a heat wimp but up here in Northern Michigan but we are not used to the heat like some of you southerners are. I would much rather deal with -50 than anything much above 80. You can always put more clothes on and more wood in the stove, but the neighbors get a little funny when you start taking clothes off!

We did have a bit of a thundershower last night and it did cool off, until the rain quit. Seriously 90??? With 80% humidity?? And no A/C. Yes, I'm whining!

This week the sale page has gone to the fish! Everything FISHY is on sale! Just for fun, check it out. Some new HURT items added too....

    Show and Tell....

Here is the first quilt I made and just recently finished! I call it the YouTube quilt as I taught myself to make a quilt watching You Tube. The one good thing about you tube, it doesn't get annoyed if you have to repeat it over and over until you get it and it is free!
I have always wanted to make a quilt. Now that I am home and forced into early retirement by a lay off I found time to develop a new hobby. I have learned not only to quilt but made new friends through a local quilt group and learned about myself through the process of making a quilt! What a wonderful hobby!

    Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : Vacation was awesome! We had so much fun. My brothers and I motorcycled through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska and back to Colorado. We hit Yellowstone, Beartooth Pass, Mt Rushmore and the Badlands on our way. I am very fortunate to enjoy so much the company of my siblings, not so much that they are so scattered that I see them only once a year.

But that's not what's happening at the cabin today. Trying to get back into the routine, get caught up with orders, garden, farm..... but I love it all!

    Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : The weather is cool, but beautiful, the pool has been filled and appropriately salted (in lieu of chlorine) and the grass is growing faster than I can keep up with it with my little push mower. I do love to mow the grass, it's fresh air, it's exercise and I love the smell. I also like (notice I said like and not love, lol) to rake up the clippings and feed them to my chickens, who are now in their prison pen because they like to dig and scratch up my freshly planted garden. They will stay there until the end of September or the first frost and the tomatoes are gone.

Kaye's Tips on Grainlines in Fabric....

There are two different grain lines in fabric. The lengthwise grain is the strongest and least likely to stretch; that makes it great for side borders in a quilt.

The cross wise grain goes across the width of the fabric (usually 42"-44" wide). This has a very little bit of stretch. Strips for quilt making are usually cut cross grain.

Any time fabric is cut off-grain, means it is not cut along one or both of the grain lines. The more off-grain the cut, the more stretch. The most stretch is on the bias (45 degrees off the grain line).

But in quiltmaking, it gets a little more complicated. Because of the way most quilting fabrics are made, they sometimes finish slightly off-grain. You have to decide if it is more important to cut it straight or the way the fabric "thinks" it is straight because of the finishing process. People who rip their fabric have the fabric as straight as it can get. But, the fabric does not necessarily "think" it is straight, and fabric remembers how it was finished.

This is what I prefer to do:

Let the fabric win this one and use it they way it "thinks" it is straight because this seems to cause less problems.

"Thinking" straight means to cut the fabric strips at a right angle (90 degrees) to the center fold.

To do this, lay the fabric as it comes from the shop with the fold at one side; the selvedges at the other side.

Place a ruler on the fabric so one of the cross-lines on the ruler lays on the fold.

Rotary cut across the fabric. Cutting at right angles to the fold keeps the fabric straight the whole length of the strip, without the dip that sometimes is at the fold.

I do not try to line up the selvedge edges, because they may or may not line up, depending on how the fabric was finished.

    Q and A From Kaye....

Q: How do you put a hanging sleeve or just simply hang a circle quilt?

K: You would make a half circle sleeve and sew it across the middle. Put a dowel in the sleeve that goes across the middle of the quilt. This will keep it stable and help keep it's form. Then bend a wire coat hanger and put it in the half circle.

Q: How do I accurately measure the finished top size, when setting up the back? I would like to do some creative applique on the back, but don't know how to position it.

K: Cut the backing 4-6" larger than the top. Fold in the fourths to find the center. That should help you position the applique.

    Show and Tell....

I made this quilt as a gift for my husband's nephew's wedding in September 2011. I had seen the quilt made up in my LQS, and I fell in love with it at first sight. Fortunately, the fabrics were all on sale at the time! It came together quite quickly, and I had a local quilter do the quilting on her long-arm. It measures 50" square - just perfect for the newlyweds to snuggle under!

Includes a roof, windows and a door with a closable flap. The playhouse is made in 5 pieces and assembled at the end of the process so you aren't sewing any really bulky bits.
