Allie Aller is Crazy for Crazy Quilts!

It may be dreary and cold outside, but Quilt Out Loud! found the top get crafty shop in the City of Brotherly Love to open the show. Surrounded by bright, modern cotton fabrics for quilting, garment and home dec sewing, Jodie and Mark play catch-up showing what they’ve been up to. Jodie visits with of Pam Mahshie of Baby Lock demonstrating the amazing drawing tablet attached to their sewing machine. Just draw on the tablet and it will come right up on the screen and stitch for you.

Mark meets up with Allie Aller, a renowned crazy quilter, in the weaving room at the Newark Museum. A traditional quilter before being bitten by the crazy quilting bug in 2001, Allies Amazon top-selling definitive book is Allie Aller’s Crazy Quilting – Modern Piecing and Embellishing Techniques for Joyful Stitching.

Overwhelmed by the craziness of crazy quilting? Allie Aller boils it down for Jodie into a simple block, which she repeats to make a quilt. Allie shows Jodie how she chooses fabrics, prepares for sewing, and sews - even curved seams- while making a block. Then, Jodie and Mark meet back up at Spool in the shop’s workroom for their book review and quilt show of sample quilts featured in the books.

A Day at Keepsake Quilting on Quilt Out Loud!

What better place to be for Christmas than the place with the most goodies for quilters? Jodie and Mark are at Keepsake Quilting, America’s favorite quilt shop, located in Center Harbor, New Hampshire.

The shop is huge and boasts over 13,000 bolts of fabric and best of all, Christmas is up all year.

Deb Comeau gives Mark the five-cent tour showing all the fabrics, kits, notions, books plus gifts for sale. We see why Keepsake Quilting is a destination for quilters from around the country and the world!

Learn Paper Piecing With Carol Doak on Quilt Out Loud!

Learn paper piecing the Carol Doak way!

Jodie joins Carol Doak in her studio for a sewing session.

They work on a simple heart design block with just seven pieces.

The design is printed on Carol’s foundation paper that goes through any home printer.

Then it’s back to Al’s Seafood for Jodie and Mark’s book review including some of Carol’s books, and a show of quilts.

Last weekend was such fun! Mark and I met so many wonderful people, including new That Patchwork Place author Cheryl Lynch.

Inspired by tiles she saw on a trip to Mexico, Cheryl ended up turning tile designs into quilt blocks into quilts into a book!

Our visit with Cheryl in the grain milling room at Prallsville Mill will air in the November episode of "Quilt Out Loud!".

"Quilt Out Loud!" at Quilts in the Mill This Friday!

Our first stop this weekend while taping the next episodes of "Quilt Out Loud!" will be at the Courthouse Quilter's semi-annual show, Quilts in the Mill, held at the Prallsville Mill. I hear it's a tremendous location for a quilt show. Dawn Golden, President of the guild has worked with me to come up with a informative and fun-filled episode. I'll keep reminding the camera guys: "The more quilts the better!"

Author Cheryl Lynch is going to stop by to show the quilts in her book "Quilt Fiesta" and even bring some in different fabrics that didn't make it into the book. In the afternoon we're heading off for a doorknock. Beware Pennsylvania quilters!

Join Jodie and Mark at the famed Northside Café. Remember that scene in the Bridges of Madison County movie? Well, it’s not quite the same with our pair, though Mark is most definitely a stand in for Clint Eastwood.

Mark and Jodie share their “quiltspiration.” As designers, they find quilt ideas everywhere they go: sidewalks, the brickwork on buildings, even doorknobs. See the blocks they made from inspiration in their travels.

Segment 1

Jodie and Mark open the show from one of the famed bridges of Madison County in Winterset, Iowa. Yes, that Madison County! As in the book by Robert J. Waller and the movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. They sample a mid-west favorite, cheese curds, which these two Easterners have only heard about. They sound unappetizing, but are great, especially fried!

Segment 2

Next stop, Jethro’s BBQ (yes, that Jethro of Beverly Hills) to try Iowa’s own take on fried cheese. Mike Booth, chef at Jethro’s, shows Mark and Jodie how they prepare fried cheddar cheese blocks—a customer favorite!

Wait until you see what we have in store for the next two segments of the show!

New On Quilt Out Loud! Applique with Michele Scott

Michele Scott of The Pieceful Quilter joins Jodie at Byrne Sewing Connection in Doylestown, Pennsylvania to show a few of her appliqué quilts and then demonstrate how to use Aurifil wool thread to machine appliqué the flowers on her Sunflower Quilt from the Fall 2009 issue of Easy Quilts magazine. Jodie and Mark review books so fresh that they aren’t even books yet! These titles will be released in January through March of 2010. All are published by That Patchwork Place.

Two new segments debut this week on Quilt Out Loud!

Segment 3: Stash Buster Holly Christmas Wreath

Join Mark in Sherry Cowley’s sewing room to make a cheerful stash buster Christmas wreath. Use fusibles, your sewing machine, and a glue gun to turn fabric scraps into holiday cheer. Mark shares the pattern for the Christmas version plus a bonus leaf pattern for fall.

Segment 4: Dueling Slow Cookers

Jodie and Mark (Child) cook up two great recipes that give you time to quilt. Prepare a meal in the morning, let it cook all day, and serve up a delicious home made meal to your family that evening. As a bonus, have leftovers for another meal-and even more sewing time! Mark prepares a pork roast with red cabbage, apples, and onions.

Watch the Second Set of Segments of Quilt Out Loud!

Amid the hubbub of setup day at International Quilt Market, Jodie meets Kelly Laws at the Baby Lock booth to learn about an intriguing new machine she’d heard about. Using just one thread in the bobbin, the Sashiko machine mimics the look of hand sewing, like that of traditional Japanese hand stitching or hand quilting. Kelly puts the Sashiko machine through its paces. You will find a free pattern for a Sashiko wall hanging on the Quilt Out Loud! Web site.

Quilt Market doesn’t end when the show floor closes. Business moves to other locations. The place to be after hours during Quilt Market is the Hyatt bar, so Jodie and Patrick head there to see who they might run into. As they sat down with her, Heidi Kaisand, National Sales Manager for APQS, was just getting her meal after travelling to Houston and then working all day to set up the booth—and it was after 9 PM! Designer and author Kay Caps Cross and the Fons & Porter team all chatted with Jodie and Patrick, telling them what they do on those long days at Market.
