Episode 11 of Quilt Out Loud: Civil War Quilts and More!

Jodie and Mark introduce the show from the Turning Point exhibit at the Atlanta History Center. One of the nation’s largest and most complete Civil War exhibitions, Turning Point depicts the war through the eyes of soldiers and civilians. One of the civilians was Carrie Berry, a little girl whose story of remaining in Atlanta through the war and tending to daily chores such as sewing, is preserved here in her diary. The theme of “preserving the pieces, preserve the stories” continues throughout the episode.

In the second segment, Susan Neil, VP of Collections and Exhibitions at the Atlanta History Center, invites Mark to her workroom, a rare opportunity. Susan has chosen a few quilts to show Mark, each of which has a story to tell. Susan shares those stories and addresses some truths and myths surrounding quilts and their history.

Quilt Out Loud! April 2010 Episode

Segment 1: What’s Up?

Inspiration is everywhere, but what better place to find it than through the eyes of a child. The Center for Puppetry Arts is the place for puppetry. None other than Jim Henson cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony! Jodie and her guest host Rob Appell introduce the show from the atrium, both having brought their own side kicks. Jodie’s is, of course her rubber duckie. She is hoping to find Ernie the puppet at the Center. Rob is accompanied by the puppet he has had sine his childhood.

Segment 2: Lights Action, Puppets!

Jodie heads off on a tour of the exhibits at the Center with curator Jeremy Underwood. From historical puppets to new age “This is a puppet?” puppets, Jodie learns the definition of what a puppet is, and has her eyes opened to the incredible imagination of puppet makers and puppeteers. At their last stop, Jeramy and Jodie find out where AWOL Rob has been during the tour—and it is off limits to the general public!

Segment 3: Kids and Quilting
Maria Peagler joins Rob in the classroom to, appropriately enough, get some wisdom on teaching kids to quilt. Maria throws quilt teas for mothers and daughters and runs Quilt Camps for kids, plus she has taught her own boys to quilts, so she knows of that she speaks!

Segment 4: Curtain Call!

Jodie and Rob hand their tickets to the usher and sit down in the theater for pleasant surpise. Who knew this is what a puppet show is? Rainforest Adventures is performed by puppeteers dressed in black so they don’t show as the puppets take stage. There’s no dialogue in this show, just music and enchantment and a lot of laughter!

Segment 5: Project “It’s in the Stars”

Jodie and Rob show you some of the many ways to make half square triangles for the show project, “It’s in the Stars” by Michele Scott. And they tell you why they prefer their favorite method. Having perfected half square triangles, pair them up with some squares to make this colorful quilt. You will find it in the 2010 issue of Kids Quilts magazine.

Segment 6: Book Review: Quilting Books for Children

The book review segments finds Jodie and Rob in the fascinating exhibits at the Center for Puppetry Arts. It’s the perfect setting to review quilting books for kids projects!
