In Short Takes on Longarm Quilting, Vicki Hoth turns her attention to the often neglected back of quilts. She offers tips for choosing backing fabrics, shows how to seam a quilt, and how you can make a quilt for the back by piecing quilt backings.

How to Choose Quilting Designs

Quilting makes the quilt! With limitless possibilities for quilting, how do you choose a design? Suzanne Hyland joins Jodie in the studio to walk through the thought process she uses when she examines a quilt and decides upon the best route to take with her quilting. She starts by asking some basic questions.

Segment One

Suzanne discusses a few simple questions to ask yourself that will help you discover the style of quilting that will complement the piecing and fabrics in your quilt. Does the quilt call for an overall design or an interpretive design? How will it be used? Is this an heirloom or a quilt for a dorm? What about the fabrics, the style of the quilt, the theme?

“You Can Do That on a Longarm?”

Get ready to be amazed. Cathy Franks thinks outside the box when she steps into her long arm studio and proves that you can do way more than just quilt with these fabulous machines. In fact, she says anything you can do on a home sewing machine with a straight stitch you can do on a longarm, and she proves it!

In this episode Cathy shows how you can do many embellishing techniques that are simple and easy and add dimension and texture to all your quilting projects. Use bits of fabric, yarns and threads in her ingenious techniques: capturing, fringing, and flash and trash.

Segment One

Cathy doesn’t throw anything away and you won’t either when you see what art you can create so easily with pieces of yarn and “flash and trash.” Using a simple “roadmap” she sketches on her backing fabric, Cathy fills in her design with bargain bin yarn, then goes on to show other techniques - even how to sew borders to your quilt on the longarm!

Segment Two

Did you know you can create fringe on your projects using a long arm? Cathy demonstrates wrapping thread and stitching it down to create funky fringe. Then she shows how she uses nylon netting on her quilt to capture small pieces of thread, stitching them down to recolor and shade the design on a piece of fabric.

In this Short Takes on Long Arm Quilting segment Handi Quilter educator Vicki Hoth turns her attention to thread tension. She explains that it all starts with the bobbin, showing sewn samples of improper tension and the fixes for each.

Segment Three

Cathy transforms a large print fabric by painting it with “Flash and Trash.” She creates sheets of tiny fusible fabric snippets which become her paint. The fabric having given her the pattern, her finished piece includes threads and fabric snippets for a total fabric makeover.

Kimmy Brunner Chosen 2009 Teacher of the Year at MQX!

Kim Brunner was named the 2009 Teacher of the Year at the Machine Quilter’s Exposition (MQX) in Providence, Rhode Island April 16, 2010. Brunner, an international machine quilting teacher and award-winning quilter, was nominated for the fourth straight year. Janet Lee Santeusanio, co-founder of MQX, states “I hold Kim in the highest regard amongst teachers in the machine quilting industry.”
Kim Brunner teaches machine quilting techniques to beginner and intermediate students. Creator and star of very popular training DVDs, she travels to major quilting venues and guilds to impart her uniquely humorous style. She is sought after as a banquet speaker and also is an accomplished writer, penning numerous magazine articles, including an expert advice column, Ask Kimmy!, for Machine Quilting Unlimited.
A frequent guest on such venues as QNNTV’s Quilt It online TV program, Brunner is a master at effectively using templates, tools and threads. Also a quilting pattern designer, well known for her feathers, she conveys a confidence and talent surpassed by few teachers and instills the same in her students.
Brunner was interviewed by the Alliance for American Quilts as part of the Quilters Save Our Stories project, archived in the American Folk Life Center at the United States Library of Congress

Twirly Whirly Feathers

Segment One

Learn a basic easy stitching technique to sew free form feathers like a pro. In this opening segment Kim provides the knowledge and skills to create those gorgeous feathers that are a hallmark of quilting feathers. Broken down, the technique is very simple. Kim shows viewers how to make the individual shapes that make up a feather design.

Segment Two

Building upon the basics of the first segment, Kim demonstrates how to vary the size of your feathers, add branches, and increase complexity. Also, she fills in spaces to add interest-with no marking!

Learn how to use rulers in your long arm machine quilting in the Short Takes on Long Arm Quilting segment. Vicki Hoth gives tips and demonstrations to show you how templates can give your quilting accuracy while keeping you safe.

Segment Three

Kim Brunner delves in further with what you can do with feather quilting designs by introducing templates. She shows you how to use them safely and easily for curved crosshatching, combining these designs with the feathers for elegant one-of-a-kind feather patterns.
