Inspiration comes from just about everywhere, magazines, pinterest, nature, and seeing fabric anywhere.  I'm constantly playing with my stash to see what I can come up with and what I need to add to it.

I find inspiration for my quilts in several areas. The first is the person, who I'm making the quilt for tells me the fabric and pattern. Strange I know. Next, Missouri Star Quilt Company and Jenny Doans tutorials, Fons and Porter magazine. My local quilt shop (Quiltique) is another top source for me.

My first inspirations come from fabric.  I love rich colors and let the fabric talk to me.  After that, it's the world around me.  Nature ranks high on the list and further down on the resources are books, magazines and TV shows.  Many times I'll even find inspiration in a painting or architectural element.  I'm an artist and that has taught me to always be observant of my surroundings for my next masterpiece.

Inspiration for a quilt normally starts with considering 'who' I am making it for, and 'what' it is being made for.  I will do an internet search with the broad ideas that I am starting with (i.e., fall leaves, sea shore, etc) and add the word 'quilt' to the search definition.  I just 'follow the links' and gather up ideas... many times (most times) my final idea isn't remotely related to what I started out with.  I have so many magazines and books, but, trying to FIND an idea that I know I *saw* in them is nearly impossible.  Internet searches seem much easier.

I find my inspiration in quilt shops, quilt shows and my granddaughters who go fabric shopping and point out patterns and colors they like (and want!).

Judy wrote re: June Member Survey: Where do you find inspiration for your quilts?

First of all, from the fabrics. I usually put a group of fabrics together that I want to use and then look for a pattern or an idea that would suit the fabrics. I love looking at magazines and quilting books for ideas, but usually the designs end up a takeoff on a pattern or a conglomeration from several patterns.

I find inspiration in a wide variety of places. I read several quilting magazines, spend time outside watching the birds and trees, walking through fabric stores, and just about anywhere else I can observe an interplay of fabric, color, and design.

Absolutely everywhere.  Flowers in the garden for color inspiration, Internet, Magazines, Grocery Store colors on packages.  Anywhere they are marketing as the color combinations are there to grab your attention.  I've never "settled" on one style so I work from bright solids to Civil War reproduction fabrics in my quilts.

I find inspiration everywhere I go!   I see color and design in most of life around me including the outdoors and seasonal changes.   I love to browse quilting magazines with Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting being one of my favorites.  I like to quilt with embroidery pictures as well; people, things and animals.

Joyce wrote re: June Member Survey: Where do you find inspiration for your quilts?

I find inspiration around me in nature, people and animals; I love color and patterns.   I enjoy using embroidery designs to create quilts and for quilting.  I find using pictures in quilt patterns is another fun design to use.   I enjoy browsing quilt books including Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting.  I always find something I 'need to know' as I browse.  I am starting to offer quilt classes in my home, a friend is teaching the classes and I am sharing my quilt books!   On loan of  course, you never know when you need a back issue for yourself!

Everywhere!  Individual fabrics and groups of fabrics that speak to each other, scenes and events in nature, quilting books and magazines.  But most of all, from some artistic lightning flash of energy between one or more of these sources and something beyond them--a scene in a book gave me my first "original" quilt idea, and I am still building the skills I know I need in order to make it happen.

My inspiration usually comes from blogs, "show and tell" at guild meetings, Pinterest, and quilt magazines.  I often buy fabrics that I fall in love with, and when I see a pattern that would work with the fabric I already have, I'm ready to go!

Primarily from the interests of the person the quilt is being made for as I usually make quilts for family members and I like to capture their interest and personality in the quilt.  After that: fabrics and photos of quilts in magazines and online.  Sometimes a photo not related to quilting or a poster will spark an "ah-ha" moment as I visualize the design as a quilt.

First and foremost from the gift God has given me. Then from watching nature, looking at quilt magazines, history, the personality of the person receiving the quilt, looking at traditional patterns, dislike modern patterns, most of all I listen to what my heart tells me is right for that particular quilt.

My inspiration comes from all the places mentioned above.  However, recently one of my grandsons had a math lesson where he had to do a math problem and the answer was a certain color on a black and white quilt ditto.  When he finished, he liked the look of the quilt so much he asked if I would make it for him.  BINGO ! the next quilt was born !

The last quilt inspiration came from my grandson who had worked a math ditto in school which involved him coloring in correct answers with their suggested colors.  He liked the look so well, he asked me to make him this quilt.  BINGO! A new quilt idea was born!

I get my inspiration mainly from magazines.  Right now though my inspiration is that my daughter is pregnant with my first grandchild.  So I am making a non-gender specific quilt, and a quilt in the main colors she is going to use in the baby's room.  I m hoping they find out whether the baby is a boy or girl so I can make a boy or girl quilt.

I find inspiration in numerous ways.  Going to quilt shops, looking through magazines or catalogues, going to quilt shows, quilt books, web sites and pinterest.  I have even been inspired by just looking a fabric.  Now if I can just find the time to do them all, I'll be doing fine.

I find inspiration just about anywhere. A tile floor at a quilt retreat inspired a stained glass quilt. Northern lights another quilt. A piece of fabric and a book of blocks another quilt. Now I'm thinking about all the waterfalls I saw while on vacation last week. As Drue said above, "Now if I can just find the time to do them all, I'll be fine."

If the quilt is for a client, I take inspiration from what I know about the client and what the quilt is going to be used for.  Otherwise, I look online, in magazines, at nature...everywhere.

Inspiration is all around us, the sky, flowers, trees, people, fabric, magazines, internet, etc., but most important is the person who will be receiving the quilt. Then you gather from all the above to see what inspires that little, "this is it".  Gathering material is next and, Surprise, you are on your way. Enjoy life's inspirations, as they are your source of a great QUILTING adventure.

I find inspiration from so many different places. Mostly from my friends that have great confidence in my skill and art. When they are asked if they know anyone that can make a quilt from a special purpose, I'm usually the one "thrown under the bus" as some say. This keeps me looking out for new ideas and beauty in all areas to create.

I find inspiration for a quilt in many ways. I check out magazines, the internet sites, shops, pattern books, sometimes I look at an old quilt and really like the design and try to make something similar. I also try to consider who will be receiving it and what it is for. Sometimes I think I worry a little too much about what I'm doing when trying to fit the quilt to the person, however there is nothing better than to see the look of a person when you know you got it right.

Mary L Cohen wrote re: June Member Survey: Where do you find inspiration for your quilts?

I mostly make quilts for an occasion/specific person, so then sometimes I design the quilt for the specific person, some times I see something made up that I fall in love with and have to have or at a quilt shop as a new kit and I also look in Fons/Porter, magazines, Pintrest and quilt shows.

My inspiration comes from the world around me and the purpose of the quilt.  Depending on who the quilt is being made for.  I look at other examples of quilts and visualize how I can make my own.

I love to visit a lot of blogs and I receive inspiration from seeing others quilts.  I have a very long list of "must make" quilts.  I have only been quilting a couple of years and like to challenge myself with each quilt I make.  I like scrappy quilts so I try to incorporate the patterns into my scrappy quilts.

Ideas come from viewing other people's quilts, Fons and Porter mag, my unbelievable quilt book library, looking at patterns in floors and ceilings and from the things the person I make the quilt for like.

I don't have much of an imagination when it comes to colors.  I usually copy the colors or try to use a line of prints from a pattern design.  Moda is my favorite fabric choice.
