depends on the project-if I want it really nice I will hand applique, if it's just something basic, I do machine.

I prefer machine applique.  I am able to do more intricate shapes.  I haven't done much hand applique, but it hasn't looked as nice.

It usually depends on how the quilt will be used. For my young grandchildren, I machine applique. A wall hanging is usually hand appliqued. I prefer the look of well-done hand work, but that method  is not the best choice.

I like to do machine applique because the arthritis in my fingers hurt too much to do much hand work anymore.

I prefer hand applique over machine applique as it is more like painting with fabric . It seems to be more one of a kind as compared to "made in China" multiplies. It is also very portable and relaxing. I feel it is more in line with heirloom pieces.

I do both hand and machine applique.  I consider hand applique more "real", but use machine applique when I just want to get the job done and don't care too much about the close up appearance.  Hand applique is also soothing and enjoyable---not so much with the machine.

I think I prefer hand as it is so relaxing and I can do of an evening while watching old movies with hubby.

I do both but machine is not as relaxing.

I have done both machine and hand applique, but I prefer the final appearance of hand applique.  It just feels as though I've made that extra effort to produce something truly handmade.  The pleasure of sitting down and stitching carefully is also very calming.  Considering how I rush through machine work, this is much more leisurely, and the end result is very rewarding.

I much prefer hand appliqué for both its look and portability.  I often do it while traveling and need little in terms of bulky supplies, can pick it up with only a few minutes to work, and find the results much more satisfying.  While I have done machine appliqué, it just doesn't satisfy my need to create the way hand appliqué does.

I prefer hand applique because I can easily take it with me.  It makes waiting time for appointments go so much quicker when I am stitching.

Depends on the quilt, but if I want something precise I hand stitch.

I would love to do more hand applique than I do, but with bilateral carpal tunnel numbness combined with arthritis, it's so much easier to do machine applique. To add a few details after the quilting is done, then hand applique is required - so my needle holed fingers & I go to it - hopefully with no blood left behind.

I enjoy enjoy hand appliqué. When I first learned hand appliqué, I found I was good at it. It was easy for me to do. My mother taught me to sew as a child, she may have shown me how to do it? Hand sewing I relaxing for me and it looks so nice. I do get better looking and smaller stitches now than when I first started.

It is important to sew small stitches and catch only the edge of the fabric you are sewing down and put your needle straight down and slightly under the edge of that stitch. Also use thread the same color as the appliqué fabric.

I think I prefer to hand applique.  I get the same relaxation and satisfaction as I do when I do my other handwork (embroidery, cross-stitch, needlepoint, etc.); there's just something about fondling the fabric and the hand movements. It also gives me an easy project to transport from site to site. I definitely prefer the look of the folded clean edge provided in hand applique (and will still use that method most times when I machine applique).  However, I do machine applique as well.  There are times when speed is the need.  Then I can still get a good looking product with the machine.

To me the word "hand" is one of those 4-letter words.  If I can not do a project on my machine, I usually do not do the project or adapt it for machine work.  One reason for utilizing my machine instead of hand work is my machine makes prettier stitches than I do by hand.

It really depends upon the project.  I did a sunbonnet sue where the buttonhole stitch with black thread was perfect on the 30's fabric and did machine applique.  Another project was a hawaiian quilt style and hand applique was my preference.  I loved doing them both.

I like hand applique because I like handwork.  I like a needle and thread.  You can sew anywhere.  You can be a part of the family and still do your own thing.  With a  sewing machine it's just you and the machine.

I also like the look of hand applique.  I use freezer paper.  I lower my ironing board to table height.  I keep all my thread, glue, scissors, etc in a kitchen flatware divider.  When I need my iron I am ready to go.  I have a work surface and all my supplies.  I have a table design in my head, just need someone to make it for me.

I confess!  I prefer the look of hand appliqué, but I always do machine appliqué!  Why, why, I hear you cry!  It's simple, I just haven't had the patience to practice hand appliqué so that I am happy with the result and the amount of time it takes me to hand appliqué means several unfinished pieces. I do love handwork; I smock and embroider.  Maybe I should just practice a bit more?

I've done both hand applique and machine applique on quilts and enjoy both. I do both and whether it is hand or machine depends on the quilt and what it is for.  For my grandchildren, who are small, baby quilts and "quirky" wall hangings - machine applique.  For bed quilts for me and Baltimore Albums - hand applique.

All machine applique because I too have arthritis in my hands (specifically in my thumb/palm joint) which makes any grasping/holding extremely difficult.  And it has greatly diminished my hand strength.

I almost always machine applique.  I have done quilts using small pieces and after many hours of appliqueing have gotten where my machine applique (satin stitch) looks better than my hand stitching!  I am also more apt to remain working at the machine for a longer time than when I hand stitch---done sooner!

I especially like hand applique - it's so very portable, and can be done most anywhere. I always have at least one project in the works, ready to pick up and take with me. I have done applique by machine, but have not mastered it - I just really prefer the look and feel of doing it by hand.

I like hand but can't do much because of carpel tunnel.  Machine takes more practice.

I like to do both of them because it make me feel that i can do anything. I do like hand applique becauce it come from me, my own hand. Bu also the machine applique give me the time to do more for gift because i do quilting to give. It give more pleasure and joy to give then to receive.

Machine applique, absolutely!  Terrible crooked, kinked, arthritic fingers just don't allow hand work of any kind much anymore.  We do what we have to in order to continue to enjoy the hobbies we love, and I love quilting.

I do both, but hand applique is my favorite because I can carry it with me on trips and also do it while listening (not watching according to my husband) to TV in the evening.  At least that way I am in the same room with my husband in the evenings.

Definitely hand appliqué. I love the quiet, contemplative nature of handwork. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes to audio books, and sometimes just to the quiet.

I use both methods, depending on the type of quilt I'm making--I really like the look of handwork, however.

Hand applique is for me.  I can get a much smoother result .  But then again I am a hand quilter.  I just like old school.

It depends on the project. However, I can no longer hand applique as I used to due to arthritis.

I prefer hand applique.  To me, machine or fused applique gives an unfinished look.  I don't like the satin stitch texture most of the time.  I have used it in selected places.  Of course, I am an oldie - have sewn by hand for nearly 70 years.  Hand applique is portable, relaxing, gives me a more acceptable (to me) finish to the quilt.

re: November Survey:  Do you prefer to hand applique or machine applique?   I prefer machine applique  at this time in my life because my hand don't work as they did when I was younger.  I refuse to completely give up, so the machine it is.

I hand applique.  I just love the feel of the fabric in my hands and the greater sense of accomplishment but then I also do hand embroidery.

I prefer hand applique! Mostly because I am a hand quilter so I find appliqueing by hand very relaxing!  Also I feel as though I am a beginner & am able to control my stitches so much easier by hand!  And I dont think I am very good on the machine yet so I will wait till I am more comfy to try to applique on the machine... dont want to ruin my projects yet :-)

I have done both hand and machine applique sometimes on the same quilt. My Love is the Back Basting method of Hand applique. This is a no muss no fuss method No templates, no marking for placement on the front of your background, no cutting shapes. No overlays,no pinning in place. All that you need is the pattern marked on the back(wrong) side of background ,your fabric, small scissors needles and thread.Great for traveling, waiting, and boring meetings.
