Needle down. I love knowing that my needle is in position to just sew and not stress the machine or me.

The one feature on any of my Janome sewing machines that I could not live without is a very simple but absolutely necessary one- the needle down feature.

I actually have three--IDT, Needle down, and and thread cutter!

The built-in dual feed system - with the automatic thread cutter being a close second - has to save yards of thread!

Any machine I buy from here on will have to have a knee bar (to raise the presser foot) like my Bernina does. I am so used to having both hands free to hold the fabric!

My first selection would be the auto needle threader and second would be the auto thread cutter.   Prior to the auto needle threader I would dread changing thread colors because it meant I'd once again have to struggle threading the needle. Now, zip/zap and I'm ready to sew.

It would be my the ability to chnage the needle position. It may not seem important until I use one of my holder machines were the needle has only ONE position.

i am amazed that people need a knee lift.  Viking has a sensor foot feature that does this for me and I wouldn't buy a machine that didn't have the sensor system.  No effort with any part of my body.

The needle threader :) I am sure I couldn't sew at all, or it would take me hours to get that thread thru the needle.  I wish my auto cutter worked...My machine has been serviced numerous times and it still cuts the thread to short.  Quality Sewing says that is just the way it is????  If I use it I have to rethread bobbin and top thread, every time. Oh well ...So my vote is the threader.......!!

Thanks,

Vickie

The automatic needle threader.  My eyes are not at their best and the threader makes sewing much easier. To me this is a must have, along with the auto thread cutter, the quarter inch foot and, oh my, I could go on and on.  Obviously I love my Janome Horizon.

It is hard to pick just one thing on my Janome machine.  I love the needle down and "scissors", and the speed control bar, but the needle threader is almost necessary.  It's such a help for quick threading.   So many great things to love about the new machines.

I really admire the needle down feature but I would have to say that I favor the clear bobbin case cover.  I had many times thought a large sided project was complete only to find that the bobbin thread ran out many, many stitches ago.  My newer machine has this feature and I love it!

My knee lift.  It was difficult to learn as the previous knee left was on my Aunt Mamie's Singer, where I learned to sew.  The knee lift was how the machine was operated.  On my Janome I would press the knee lift and the foot pedal at the same time with crazy results.  After a few times I got the hang of it, and now wouldn't be without it for appliqué.

I have an older mid-80s Bernina that has a knee-lift.  I love it.  Wish it had needle up/needle down because I'm sure that would be a favorite feature otherwise.

cldexter wrote re: June Member Survey: What is the one feature on your sewing machine you could not live without?

I never thought it would happen, but I have to admit that I am at an age where I definitely need the needle threader. Otherwise I would have the magnifying glass in one hand and the thread in the other. I recently bought a new machine that has this feature. I now know why I became so frustrated while threading the needle.

I just bought a new machine a few months back, and the fact that it has a needle up-down was the main reason for the purchase!   I love the needle up-down, but it also has a foot that  trims as it  sews turning the garment into a overlock look without buying an overlock machine. I just love it!

I love many features on my machines. The one that I use the most is the knee lift. I learned to sew on my grandmothers machine back in the 50's & it was one of the first electric machines. It has the knee lift, but I had never seen another machine with one until the past few years. Many of the ladies in my quilt group have the knee lift but choose not to use it. I did talk one friend into trying it & now she loves it.

Being able to drop my feed dogs for free motion quilting!  MY first machine had this feature and I didn't use it because I wasn't a quilter...YET!  When that machine died and I replaced it I felt is was no bug deal so I got a lower line machine.  Boy was I wrong.  I have now replaced that machine with the best singer I could afford and I love drooping those dogs!

I recently upgraded to a baby lock Symphony.  I have died and gone to heaven.  It has a knee lift, but you don't need it.  With one touch on the screen you have automatic presser-foot lift whenever you stop.  Combine that with needle down and it is a breeze to appliqué any curve.  I am loving this feature and this machine!!!

That's a difficult question to answer! I'd have to say the knee lift but I would be just as lost without the thread cutter, needle threader & needle up/down features. If I had a dual feed system, like Pfaff machines do, I'd miss that, too.

I have several.  On my Pfaff QE 4.2 it's the IDT, Needle down, needle threader, and decorative stitches.  On my Viking #1+'s (I have 2 of them),  it's the "tap the foot control" to raise/lower the needle, and the decorative stitches.  On my Viking Designer 1, it's the ease of embroidery and a machine that never fails to do what I ask.  My Ultimate machine would have every decorative stitch from every machine there is.

The needle up/down feature on on Pfaff Expression 4 is the best!!! The needle stops in the down position and the presser foot raises to pivot height.  Love it!!

My automatic needle threader. As my eyes get older it is so much harder to thread the needle. This feature makes it possible for me to continue enjoying sewing and most of all quilting. Happy quilting to all.

I have so many it is hard to name just one but I guess that as I age the automatic needle threader makes things the easiest, but the needle up/down position and left/right moveability would come in close seconds.

Electricity! I learned how to sew back in the 70's on my great-grandmother's Domestic treadle and had to tie all my thread ends because it doesn't back-stitch. I used hammer-on snaps for closures or had my mom make hand-sewn button holes on my clothes. Making a bed-sized quilt was quite a challenge! I still use it occasionally but mainly use my 1975-era Singer Stylist 534 that I bought second-hand in 1981. My local quilt shop keeps it in fine repair and it sews like a charm. I love the back-stitch, zigzag, decorative, and button hole features. If and when I ever buy a new machine, I will feel like I have died and gone to the 2nd level of Heaven because just having an electric machine makes me feel like I'm in Heaven already. We have had a few power failures through the years when I was able to still use the treadle, but electricity is grand! Little things mean a lot.

Not fair to choose just one.  Needle-down is great, but so are the needle threader, walking foot (or even foot), thread cutter, etc., etc., etc.

The needle up/down button or setting feature is definitely the most important in any machine these days.  I do also like the button feature for raising and lowering the presser foot instead of having to work with a lever.   And third on my Brother Laura Ashley I like the auto hover feature when doing applique.

My favorite feature on my Husky is the automatic sensors, especially the bobbin thread sensor. It stops stitching and warns me when my bobbin thread is low.  If I am in embroidery mode, it offers to move the hoop to bobbin position so I can go ahead and change or refill the bobbin.  No more discovering that the bobbin ran out several minutes ago!

There is something I'd really like to see machine designers incorporate; making it easier to change the needles.  I cannot feel the flat side of the needle anymore and it takes me quite awhile to get the new needle inserted.  It would be nice if that part could drop down so I could see where the needle should go.

Just having a working sewing machine is the best. I am fortunate to have a machine with knee lift for the pressure foot, needle threader for my aging eyes and needle down feature so I don't have to keep reaching up for the flywheel.

The one feature on my Janome 9000 sewing machine I would not want to live without is the knee lift  first ,the automatic tension and veriable speed . Also love the drop in bobbin and almost empty bobbin  reminder.I love the touch screen features of my machine most.

There are so many!   I really have to have my needle threader on a daily  though!

It seems the only sewing machines I am using continually have the automatic threaders cutter.  I am so spoiled now.

Love the needle threader.  Old eyes. LOL

It's funny that we have all become so accustomed to the reverse stitch feature that few mention it but it would be hard to do without. Beyond that, I really like the needle up/down feature.

Built in dual feed for sure, but also love the needle down and the presser foot automatically raising when I stop. Wish I had an automatic thread cutter.

Needle stop down, it's like an extra hand.

I love all the features on my machine, but best of all is that I have a quilting stitch feature. When you get older it is hard to get the same speed to space stitches and this feature is great on my Singer machine
