The "Ugly Quilt"

My brother's girl friend asked if I would make a quilt if she got the material. I didn't know how to say no, and ended up making the quilt. It was the ugliest fabric ever. Sweatshirt and velor type fabric. The ugliest colors imaginable. I got to choose the pattern.  My "sewing buddy" (dog) wouldn't even come in the room while I was sewing it. My poor dog gave her seal of approval on all the quilts to that date, always laying on some portion of it while I was working on them. My son and daughter would tell me to put the "ugly quilt" away while they were home. It took forever but I finally finished it, she loved it. I have taken pictures of most of the quilts I have made and have them in an album. It is dubbed the "ugly quilt" in the album. When my brother and his friend broke up, she got custody of the quilt. I made him a new one for his 50th birthday, he mentioned I was right the other one was ugly.

Libby I love the pattern.  I also kind of like the colors...they look warm to me.  Not too sure about the fabrics though.

Libby you tried to make a silk purse from a sow's ear.  I think you did a bang up job with what you were given.  Perhaps if there had been some print fabric in the mix,. it would have been more to your liking.

Thanks everyone. Fits with this month's poll question. Everyone found something nice about it. I loved the pattern but the fabrics did me in. I can't bring myself to try it again. Another good thing about it, it was very warm and cuddly. Kinda heavy to work with but it did keep me warm while I was tying and putting on the binding. Also made it easy for me to tell the next one who asked "NO". By the way, I have six brothers and five sisters plus their extended families.

I do custom machine quilting.   Believe me, I've quilted some quilts that were uglier than this one.

But I think if you go out of your way to make a quilt, spend the time required  to make this piece of art, ugly or not,  it's a wonderful thing.  Don't ever give up. Some one is sure to like it. Monique

I would never choose those colors or fabrics.  However, it may be just what another person loves.  Yes, I think I would (and have) declined the opportunity to make a quilt of another person's choice.  I like pink or blue quilts :o)

I agree with Marge...a printed fabric--maybe a yellow printed/patterned in place of the solid yellow--would have been more appealing. I do like the warm colors and the pattern, & I'm sure it worked up quickly, but what an odd choice of fabrics!

I have to give you lots of credit for even working with the fabrics and fabric color choices.  I think you made lemonade from lemons!!!  There is no other way to put in my opinion.  Take pride in your work.  There are 2 important things to consider here.  One you finished it and 2 the recipient loved it.  What more can one say about it.

Shocking at first, but it kind of grows on you. Not my choice of colors or fabrics, but sure looks like it would be so nice to cuddle up with on a cold day to keep warm. You did a great job with what you had to work with!

The pattern is nice & I like the colors - just can't imagine all the work you put in with such odd fabrics. However, if a quilt keeps you warm & toasty, then that's what matters. And the person who chose your materials was happy with the results. Kudos to you!

Your construction and your placement of the fabrics was wonderful.  Funny thing I have experienced when someone wants me to make them a quilt, they have no idea about fabric and what will work and what won't.  You did a fine job and if she loved it that is all that matters. Some people think reptiles are cute and cuddly.  God Bless them.

I can understand how you felt about the "ugly" quilt.  For my grand-daughter's 10th birthday her mom wanted me to make her a quilt.  She got the "fabric with horses" - it was fleece.  I thought it would be a breeze - just bind a big piece and be done.  Nope!  She wanted a 2-color, pieced quilt, with batting and backing, the whole bit.  Queen size, too.  What a project!  Quilting it was like wrestling with a polar bear!  I did get it finished and it looked pretty good, though.  Heavy...my GD LOVED it!  Now a teen, still uses it on her bed.  Guess it was worth it, but I won't volunteer on another one like it.

So much for ugly-I like it! I think the pattern you choose enhances the colors. Working with that fabric, however...

wouldn't want to work in those fabric's but the pattern is nice and in a nice cotton or flanel it would be nice.

The 70's called and want their quilt back. LOL but I can see how someone would like it. It is good that she liked the fabric combo after you made the quilt, it would have been a terrible shame for that quilt to be an orphan at your house.

If you think your quilt is ugly, you would really laugh at my first attempt at a "real" quilt...I laugh when I even call it a "real" quilt...however, my son loved it, used it, and now it is a filler quilt on our winter bed in MN...we need the warmth, ha!  I showed my ugly quilt to my small group and there was complete silence for about 30 seconds and then everyone burst out laughing!  I don't mind your colors or the pattern, but the fabric sounds a little strange...oh, well.  Someone does love it!

In the fast world of fabric...we all get to make our own choices. She made her's.

It  is not as beautiful as some. Not nearly as bad as others.
