We're onto the last stage of the block of the month! The border consists of four nine patches and some strip sets.

For the quilting design, Mavis Rosbach custom designed a wonderful pattern that celebrates the seasons and events through out the year. So appropriate! Check it out!

Last BOM Video Will Be Up Tonight

Hi BOMer's,

The video is transcoding right now for the second time. Operator error yesterday, which I just discovered this morning.

I have to head off to the Georgia Quilt Show momentarily so I can't wait until it finishes to put it up. I'll do it as soon as I get home tonight. My assistant would take care of it but she's outside hunting for mice.

Jodie's Sampler: Video How-to #1

Welcome to the first of six videos designed to help you create Jodie's Sampler!

In this video I show you how to sew the center section of the quilt - the bricks. This is a great place to start because it is simple piecing and you can get a lot done quickly. We all like the gratification of seeing our project take shape!

If you haven't purchased a kit yet, go to our shop and order one. It's never to late to get started! They should be ready to ship any day now.

Per the Materials and Cutting Instructions post, you should have your 2-1/2"-wide strips cut and ready when you watch this video. They are the ones in "Baggy A."

The video shows you how to make your bricks in a very straight forward fashion:

sew sets of strips together
cut them into segments
then lay these out to form your block sew the segments into blocks and then sew the blocks together. That's it!

Be sure to become a member of the group BOM Workshop: Jodie's Sampler. You'll be able to see how other BOM'ers are coming along on their quilts, ask questions, and simply enjoy great camaraderie while making your quilt. Just click the Join This Group button when you get to the group's homepage.

As I mention in the video, it's a good idea to test your quarter inch seam. This is a good time to test it, and to get help getting yours just right while QCA members are sewing and sharing. For more info, watch this video I just created on this very subject.

Cutting Instructions

As you cut fabric for each block, place the fabric into a plastic baggy and label it with the letter listed below.

PLEASE NOTE the following correction posted as of May 2, 2010:
- Baggy D now includes fabric 3, not 2
- Baggy E now includes fabric 9, not 8
The corrected numbers are underlined in the instructions below

Baggy A

Cut Fabric 1, 2, 4, 5
1 & 4 - cut 6 strips 2 ½" x WOF, cut 1 strip 2 ½" x 15"
2 & 5 - cut 6 strips 2 ½" x WOF; cut 1 strip 2 ½" x 30"
(or just cut 7 strips of each color 2 ½" x WOF)

WOF = Width of Fabric (from selvage to selvage)

QCA Block of the Month Workshop: Jodie's Sampler

Announcing our First Annual QCA BOM Workshop!

Years ago we ran a block-of-the-month on QNNtv.com, and it was such a success that I've been itching to do another ever since! So, I designed this quilt and have taped six monthly video how-to's which we'll release along the way to help you make your quilt. This project is free for the whole community - anyone is welcome to follow along! And because this is such a wonderful community of quilters, you'll have a lot of help and companionship as you make your quilt along the way. We'll set up a special BOM group and a forum thread, too. This approach has been popular with other community projects like Sandy's Mystery Quilt Workshops. If you're in a bind (no pun intended!) just post a question and you'll have a helping hand in no time!

About the quilt: Jodie's Sampler

My aim was to start out with a true block sampler for our first BOM quilt. I didn't want it to take an entire year to make. And I wanted it to be easy enough for anyone who has a quilt under his or her belt to make. I opened Electric Quilt and started playing. When I passed three choices around to several fellow quilters for input, this iteration of my design was deemed the winner.

Most of the blocks are large, thereby cutting down on the difficulty (even if only perceived!) and time it takes to make them. I've included everything from simple nine-patches and bricks to half and quarter-square triangles as skill builders. The challenge is the flying geese. But have no fear: We sew them too large and cut them down to size so your fudge factor is built in!

Finished size is 96" x 108"

How the BOM Workshop Works (and what to expect)

Next week the pattern will be made available right here - free! Download it, then choose your fabrics or order your kit. Then get cutting! Follow the instructions to cut and organize the pieces for you blocks so they will be all ready each month as you get to them.

Video How-To's

On May 15th, the first how-to video will be posted on this blog, showcasing tips for assembling the first block section (hint: it's the middle section!). On the 15^th of each subsequent month, a new video will be posted covering the block for that month.

In the final post in October, we will point you towards Mavis Rosbach's original BOM quilting design which she used on both of our quilts. It is so clever! She included every image imaginable depicting each month of the year (and related events). Cute!
