I love this picture of the older woman surrounded by her quilts in front of her log cabin. I learned to quilt from my mother and grandmother. I grew up under the church quilting frames. I think I knew how to put a quilt on a quilt frame by the time I was 12 years old. My first experience quilting, my mother had me piece a simple 9 patch pillow top. While I was hand piecing that dad made me a 24x24" square quilting frame that when my 9 patch was pieced, mom taught me how to hand quilt it.

Then in my later teens I learned to quilt on tricot fabric. Tricot quilts were all the rage in the late 70's and early 80's. Boy could I get my stitches straight and even on tricot! I loved quilting it. I remember helping the "quilting ladies" finish over 25 wedding quilts for local newly weds. I remember my mother on her hands and knees with a special marking pencil moving the quilting pattern around and painstakingly marking the quilt for quilting.

I tried to piece quilts when I was in my late 20's and early 30's. Templates were not my thing. I had no knowledge about good quality fabric and soon my blocks were wonky and seams never matched up. I even bought fabric to make my second daughter a baby quilt before she was born. I never got it made because the templates ran me off.

Luckily when I moved back to Idaho I was asked to go to the local quilt guild here in Bear Lake. After the first show and tell I wanted to go home with my tail between my legs! Boy could those ladies quilt!!! A kind quilter grabbed me and encouraged me to stay. Am I ever glad I did. 20 years later I made that baby quilt for my second daughter's boy. I knew newer techniques and speed piecing and did not have to trace one template!!!!! What joy it was to give that baby quilt to my beloved grandson.

My goal this summer is to enjoy what ever I am doing, whether I am at work or at home. I want the summer to last a long time. I do not put my quilting away for the summer and say I am too busy, I just work on simpler projects that have no deadlines. Boy what a difference it has made at work. I am less stressed and much happier.

Was looking at quilting things the other day and came upon this cute quilt with bunnies! Loved it and had to share. I know I am always looking for something new to share with a friend who is expecting a baby. The rabbits just make this quilt! It has simple squares to piece and simple appliques to make it complete.

Had very fun visitors to the National Oregon/California Trail Center today. Lots of fun people. Just signed a contract with Bonnie Hunter to teach two workshops and give a trunk show at our center in April of 2018.

Great to be posting again. Internet down for the weekend so I just quilted and quilted.

Quilt Preparation Day

Today, was a day for preparing to make a quilt. I know that we all enjoy the part where we actually sew something together. But, at some point, we have to prepare for the sewing. Whether it's reading the pattern, pre-washing fabric, cutting, or winding a bobbin, the actual stitching cannot begin without some preparation. MN Quilt Show 2013

This year the state quilt show was held in beautiful Duluth, Minnesota, on the shore of Lake Superior. I drove up with three friends from our local guild. We spent the morning going through the amazing exhibits and the afternoon visiting the vendors before heading back home. I've shared below pictures of the quilts that particularly tickled my fancy. Maybe you'll see a design, a quilting motif, or a fabric that will inspire you.

For each picture, I have placed the information card before the picture of the quilt so that you can see who created each masterpiece. I've started with the nonjudged quilts, so you'll have to scroll further down for the real show-stoppers!

I was impressed with this one because I think even I could do it. The quilting is simple, but effective!

This is a great quilt idea for a teenage boy. It's a QST kaleidoscope, easier than a 6-piece, and the fabric is fun!

I love this cheerful quilt! I don't know why it wasn't entered into the judged category. Nice quilting, too.

Can you tell that inside each 3-D tent is a unique scene?

We're getting into some photo art quilts here. Again, how come they are not in the judged category?

She said she will never do another one? Gini, I hope you don't feel that way after creating your fine photo art quilt.

Since I just cut a lot of my scraps into 4 1/2 inch squares, this is the kind of scrappy I should think about sewing.

I'm excited that these two designers from Glad Creations are coming to speak to our guild next October!

Although this is designed to look like a post card with a message and an address on the reverse side, it is not a quilted post card. This is much larger.

I recognized this pattern as one I have seen several of you do here on QCA.

Good example of embellishing with thread.

This quilt made me think of Thea.

Do you see that it is a deer? When we were standing directly in front of it, it wasn't so obvious.

I thought this was a unique way to use a panel.

It was fun to spy some unexpected details on this quilt.

Once again, I don't understand why some of these quilts weren't entered in the competition. Wow!

Okay, so now we're coming into the modern quilts - still unjudged. They sure had fun making the letters of this banner!

This reminded me of that fancy door quilt the gentleman on QCA was making. What was his name?

I like the water background of this.

This is for those of you who enjoy hand embroidery.

Postcards for Sukochi! I especially liked this one...

I've seen one of these color challenges before. Notice the colored line that goes from quilt to quilt to quilt.

Apparently, some people don't read the information cards. I heard several members of the undercover quilt police making comments on this quilt not being square. Did they not see the phrase "free form"??

FINALLY, we found the judged quilts. Wouldn't you know my camera battery called it quits right then, so the rest of these are from my phone camera, and it doesn't handle low light as well. You will likely see more motion blur on these. Sorry.

I've just learned how to sew hexagons, so I was especially excited about this quilt.

This was wool applique onto a cotton backing.

What a simple idea and look how beautiful it turned out!

Some more hand embroidery. We just started a hand embroidery sub-group in the guild, so the embroidered quilts caught my eye.

Completely hand painted. Sorry the picture quality is so poor. Look at this close-up!

Another challenge! I'm going to enter one of these next year!

The detail in this quilt was amazing and really gave it a 3D effect. Unfortunately my close-up of the squirrel's fur is blurry.

I'm glad my friend was standing right in front of this so you could see the scale of it. Notice the use of squares in squares.

Thanks for viewing the show with me. Truly, that was only about one fourth of the quilts. We did spend our last two hours in Duluth visiting the vendors, and I picked up a few goodies.

Today at the Cabin : And this week, more rain and less sunshine. This is crazy. Most of the garden is in, so the rain is good, maybe we could arrange so the rain stays on the garden side of the house and I get sunshine in the front yard. Anyone with me? Oh yeah, I also spent a lot of time this morning dismantling the ducting in the basement as a kitten had fallen down the vent and gotten stuck in there. Life on the farm is NEVER boring!

Q and A From Kaye....

Q: If piecing is ok, should the seams be sewn down so the rod doesn't get caught while being inserted? If they should be sewn down, should the seams be pressed open first, or to one side?

K: Press seams to one side. Insert rod from the opposite side or sew down seam allowances.

Q: Is there a rule of thumb on what color of thread to use for the quilt top? I have never made a quilt and I am not sure what color of thread to use. The quilt top is in various colors of blues, greens and reds, with small amounts of beige.

K: Use gray for dark, beige or off white to piece light colors.

Q: Is there a guideline on how to figure the width of the sashing or binding to go on a quilt? For example, if there are 9 inch squares and 12 squares, what is the size of the binding that would go in between each one to make a wall hanging? Is there a formula for figuring this out?

K: Your sashing should be no wider than the size of the squares, and binding can be any width. It all depends on how you want it to look. If your sashing is wider than your squares, it tends to overcome your design a bit. When it comes to your border, sometimes a wider one pulls your design together more and accentuates your design. Your best bet is to lay it out before sewing them on. Try different widths and see how it looks with your squares. When you find one that work with it and is appealing to you, go with it.

FLOWERS AROUND THE CABIN QUILT

Just had to share this photo with everyone. I love the way the flowers are around the log cabin blocks! (Now I have to say, that the last time I did a log cabin quilt It was interesting!!!) But, I keep seeing really great patterns with the log cabin block. May be it is a sign that I need to try another one. My friend Jill just tells me that the more I do them the better I will get.

Today at the National Oregon/California Trail Center we saw about 400 visitors. Many of them fell in love with the ladies quilts! We sold 3 quilts today. One quilter was helping her tour director pick out a quilt for his mother's birthday in August. It was interesting to listen to her comments about this quilt and that quilt.

What I found most interesting, was that the quilt she finally recommended was one that had been hand bound. I hear many quilters say that stitching up the binding is the most boring part of the quilt. Yes, it takes the most time, and I understand their frustration. But just remember, the quilt is as much about you the quilter as about the person who buys it. I feel when I take the time to bind it by hand, I am leaving part of me with the quilt. What are your thoughts and feelings?

A QUILTER'S PERFECT DILEMMA

Greetings from the Oregon Trail!

i saw this post the other day and just laughed and laughed! In our local quilt guild, we have a wonderful little lady of about 60ish. She is so proper and her quilting is always perfect. But at one of our Oregon Trail Sew Days she said to me, "I am just one of those girls who like to lay on a fainting couch and eat truffles!"

It is a quilter's dilemma, to see the perfect fabric and have no money to get it right then. Then to come back and find that it is gone. My biggest hassle is that I fall in love with fabrics that are about out of print. I find the perfect fabric for the top, but when I go back to get the backing no one carries it, even online!

I have learned to research or ask how long a line of fabric has been out. If it is more than a year old, I purchase enough for the top and the back!

What type of quilt is this?

Hello Quilting Community,

I have just received this quilt and would love assistant identfying it.I do not think it was hand sewn, but made on a machine at home. It seems unfinished. The backing is a sheer type of material that holds it together, and it does not have any batting. Is this an unfinished project? It was stored away for a while so I am afraid of even washing it. Should I just hang it? Please see pics. Any type of info is appreciated. Thank you!!

BEAUTIFUL SUMMER SUNDAY

I don't know what your weather is like in your part of the quilting world today, but here on the Oregon Trail in Montpelier Idaho, it is so beautiful!!! We had a very cold long winter. (Some of us haven't put out our tomatoes yet! It is still freezing at night!)

We saw many travelers today. At one point we had over 200 people in our lobby! It was great to visit with them and teach them about the Oregon Trail and the pioneers who traveled the trail. As I was sitting outside waiting to say good by to a motor coach, you could smell summer. I know that sounds wierd, but you could smell pine trees, lilacs and the Russian Olive trees in bloom. We are supposed to get into the 80's today. The warmest day yet.

It feels so good after a long cold winter. That being said I have attached a photo of a favorite quilt. It is on my bucket list to make in the near future. I even purchased the pattern! I hope to make it for my family as a Christmas throw quilt. I love the snowflakes and the snowmen.

One other thing for the day. My grandmother used to tell me do any of the chores you hate out on the porch/deck and they will seem easier. That is so true for folding clothes, sorting sox, and peeling potatotes.

After all the rain in April and May, June has bloomed. Although the weather remains cool, which I prefer, the outdoors is beginning to look like summer. The rose bush has had lots of buds and bloomed this week. The irises and peonies also bloomed over the week. The lilies are budding and should bloom in a week or so, depending on the weather. NEW AND FRESH QUILT DESIGNS

Found some new and fresh quilt designs I just love. I was perusing Face Book and hooked up with a little shop in Logan, UT called My Girl Friend's Quilt Shop. I have shopped there before, and after their owner did a trunk show at our quilt guild, I went back so see what was new. (That was the shop that the fat quarters got me in for the Fox in the Hen House quilt!)

I was looking through some of their patrons pictures and loved the new approach to traditional blocks. I also like the fresh colorful look of the quilts. They seem young to me.

I was a muddy quilter for a long time because most of the good women of my guild are muddy quilters. I like muddy once in a great while, but now am itching to use color in my quilts. I have attached one of the quilts to this blog post , but don't know how to attach several. (If any one knows please let me(AKA Wilma Flinstone) know. )

I will put the rest in my gallery and title them fresh new designs.

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : Rain threatening outside. The sky is an overcast gray, there is a slight breeze and yes, I can smell the rain. New chicks have arrived on the farm, we have Rhode Island Reds (for eggs), Turkeys and Ducks, and Cornish Rocks (for meat).

I think baby chicks are my favorite. Exploring with my grandson in the barn the other day and we discovered a 2nd batch of kittens; just minutes old. Seriously, they were still being born. Normally we'd pick them up and cuddle and hold, but it's too early. We'll leave mama alone for a bit.

It's Very Purse-O-Nal Pattern - Brand New!

"It's Very Purse-O-Nal" is an attractive tote that is excellent as an everyday carry-all or as a convenient travel bag. The exterior has two roomy patched pockets and a handy (and easy to apply) zipper pocket on back that's just perfect for your cell phone or glasses. There's lots of room and pockets inside and, thanks to the side ties, you can adjust the top opening from wide to narrow to accommodate your purse-o-nal needs. (13" W x 9.5" H x 5" D)

For Janome 12000 Owners....

I asked Janome why does it take so many steps to locate the 1/4" seam on the Janome 12000?

Basically it is because the 12K is considered a full purpose TOL machine that is built for tailoring, home dec, crafting, embroidering, as well as quilting. So center needle position is considered the most common position.

Since the feed dogs are so much wider now, which makes for great control, the needle needs to be significantly moved to the right in order to use the "O" quarter inch foot. And once again since "piecing" is only one function of the machine, the quarter inch stitch was put into the quilting category as well as in the patchwork section of sewing applications.

And Janome has solved my problem -

If you want to always have the needle ready to go for the quarter inch seam, without having to go through the extra screens, simply follow these steps to create your Favorite Stitch.

1. Set function > Ordinary Sewing > page 6> turn on Favorite Stitch > OK

Now the machine will retain any changes made to the Utility stitches.

2. Select Utility stitch 1 or 4. (I like to use stitch 4 so that I still have straight stitch center needle position)

3. Touch Adjust and move the needle position to 8.3 > OK

Now the default of that stitch is changed to this new setting.

Now whenever you select that stitch it is ready to use for the quarter inch foot.

Quilt Hanging Sleeve by Machine....

1. After the quilt is quilted, this hanging sleeve is put on the back of a quilt entirely by machine.
2. The sleeve should be wide enough so the fold will extend from the top of the quilt to about 1/8" below a border seam on the front of the quilt.
3. Cut a strip this width. Cut the length of the strip approximately 6" less than the width of the quilt.
4. Fold under the short edges 1/4", press and stitch.
5. Fold and press the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
6. Pin the raw edges of the folded sleeve even with the top edge of the back of the quilt.
7. Stitch the sleeve to the quilt using 1/8" seam. The binding will cover this stitching.
8. Pin the folded edge of the sleeve about 1/8" below a seam on the front of the quilt.
9. Stitch in the ditch from the front of the quilt through the seamline, catching the folded edge on the back.
10. Finish the quilt by adding the binding. Perfect mitered corners are easy following my techniques.

QUILTING WITH FRIENDS

Spring has finally come to the Bear Lake Valley! Friday the Oregon Trail Center hosted another "Sew Day" for our local quilters. Our numbers were few, but we spent all day working on projects that needed to be finished. At first the center had decided to wait until fall to host the bi-monthly "Sew Days". As the weeks went by more and more ladies asked if they could come through the summer.

As the director, I knew how busy the center can get, but I too was missing getting together with the ladies and laughing , talking and sewing. The board room was not being used and so we invited the ladies to come. We had two motor coaches visit the center that day and many walk in visitors. They were thrilled to meet some of the ladies who had quilts in the quilt show! One little lady from Lancaster, PA almost missed her bus because she got lost visiting with the quilters.

Today was a perfect warm June day. As I sat on my deck and sewed on my Fox in the Hen House quilt I suddenly had an idea! In June I hope to have two "Sew Days", one week day and one weekend day. I think I will ask the ladies if they would like to sew out in the pavilion, next to the center. There is electricity and shade and great tables to work on. What fun would that be?????

I will take plenty of pictures, and may be the ladies would do a small show and tell. Then I will post them on this blog and in the gallery for all of you to see.

Spotlight on Michael Miller Fabrics 2013

Michael Miller was born in the spring of 1999. The brainchild of Michael Steiner and Kathy Miller. Two parents brought together not by love and marriage but solely by professional respect for each others' abilities. By leveraging their lives for an SBA loan, borrowing money from family and living on credit cards, Michael and Kathy were able to give birth to a start-up fabric company called "Michael Miller Fabrics".

The first year in business proved to be just as hard as raising a newborn. There were many long days and many sleepless nights. As a result of limited funds, Michael and Kathy were unable to afford the high rent of a Manahattan office space. Michaels' NewYork City apartment provided them with the initial space they needed. Kathy spent long days in the kitchen which served as a design studio while Michael spearheaded production and sales in the dining room.

As time went on the company grew to a team of around 20 people and moved to a "home" of its own at 118 West 22nd street in New York City.

This dedicated and enthusiastic group are committed to expanding with a product that stands out in the industry, while at the same time closely tending to the needs of the customers we hope to inspire.

The largest quilt and fiber art museum in the world, the National Quilt Museum showcases breathtaking exhibitions in nearly 30,000 square feet of contemporary gallery space. Visitors from every continent and all 50 states marvel at the artistry of the Museum’s 320-piece collection of contemporary quilts and ever changing touring and thematic exhibitions that celebrate traditional and nontraditional quiltmaking methods. The Museum collection features a vast array of fiber art by internationally renowned quilt artists including French quilter Inge Mardal, Shirley P. Kelley and Sue Benner.

Expanding the vision and advancing the art, the Museum seeks to educate, promote and honor today’s quiltmaker. Workshops taught by expert instructors including Diane Gaudynski, Pat Holly, Sharon Schamber and Denyse Schmidt provide diverse learning opportunities for quilters of all skill sets.
